  • 3.Eeva Simons shows us that a physical disability doesn't necessarily bar one from dancing on the stage. With skillful handling, she can make her wheelchair do graceful moves and win applause worldwide. The 34-year-old is among a group of four Finnish performers with different physical disabilities.
Simons has been bound to a wheelchair since jumping from a roof in a suicide attempt that ended her dancing career 16 years ago.She said that for a long time she had been depressed, with no idea how to adapt to her changed conditions. "The incident had a big effect on me," she said. "I had never thought what it would be like to be a wheelchair user.It was difficult."
But positive changes came several years later when she met a group of disabled people at a community centre.Their interest in alternative ways of movement lighted her love for dance and life again.

In one moving scene about her post-accident mental condition, the frustrated Simons sits on the floor, before crawling to a wheelchair and accepting her new tool.Director Paasonen said the dancers were sharing their life experiences, feelings, states and thoughts with audience and that the show was very personal.

  • 4.Planned missions to the moon need to hurry up to avoid hitting one of the busiest periods for extreme space weather, according to scientists conducting the most in-depth ever research on solar storm timing.
Scientists at the University of Reading studied 150 years of space weather data to look into patterns in the timing of the most extreme events, which can be extremely dangerous to astronauts and satellites. This new research on space weather timing allows predictions to be made for extreme space weather. Therefore,it could be used to plan the timing of activities, which could be affected by extreme space weather, for example, major space missions.
The researchers found for the first time that extreme space weather events are more likely to occur early in or late solar cycles-such as the one just starting. The findings may have influences on the NASA-led Artemis mission. It plans to make humans return to the moon in 2024,but can be put off to the late 2020s.
Professor Mathew Owens,a space physicist at the University of Reading, said, "Until now,the most extreme space weather events were thought to be random in their timing.Though there is no set pattern of the events, this research suggests they are more predictable."
In the new study, the scientists used a new method applying statistical(统计的)modelling to storm timing for the first time.Previous research generally focused on how big extreme space weather events can be,based on observations of previous events.Predicting their timing is far more difficult because extreme events are rare,so there is relatively little historic data to identify patterns. The findings suggest that any major planned space missions, which is beyond the next five years, will have to consider the higher probability of extreme space weather late in the present solar cycle between 2026 and 2030.

(1)What can we learn about the study from the first two paragraphs?

A.It has lasted just 150 years.
B.It doesn't refer to space weather data.
C.It shows space weather has no effect on astronauts.
D.It makes it possible to predict extreme space weather.
(2)Why might the NASA-led Artemis mission be put off?

    A.To research solar cycles.
B.To avoid effects of space weather.
C.To meet the needs of the astronauts.
D.To make humans return to Earth in 2024.
(3)What does the underlined word "random" in paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Irregular.
    B.Easy.
    C.Limited.
    D.Changeless.
(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The study is useful for future space missions.
B.The planned space missions should be put off.
C.Extreme space weather will happen before 2026.
D.Previous observations make no difference to the study.

  • 5.In so many ways, cyberspace(网络)mirrors the real world.People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips.Others buy and sell products.Still others look for friendship,or even love.
Some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They're looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others end in tears.
Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.Rather,a person's thoughts or at least the thoughts they type are what really counts. So even the shyest person can become a chat room star.
Usually, this "faceless" communication doesn't create problems.Identity doesn't really matter when you're in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this focus on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation.Where else can so many people come together to chat?
Supporters of online relationships say that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first.Personal appearance doesn't get in the way.
But critics(批评者)of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why?Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.Internet users can carefully choose their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don't have to worry about what their "nonverbal(不用语言表达的)" communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they're not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns,it's easy to let one's imagination "fill in the blanks".This surely leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different from the real person.
So,before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll,"Life in the real world is far richer than anything you'll find on a computer screen."

(1)Which of the following sentences is NOT true according to the critics?

A.Nobody can truly know another person in cyberspace.
B.Internet users can choose their words to create any image they want to give.
C.The Internet allows couples to know how intelligent they are.
D.In a sense,Internet users are not really themselves.
(2)Even the shyest person can become a chat room star because what really counts is a person's

    A.nonverbal communication
    B.identity shown in the chat
    C.knowledge and appearance
    D.thoughts typed on the screen
(3)The underlined word "This" in Paragraph 6 refers to

    A.having exciting conversations online
    B.forming personal relationship in cyberspace
C.imagining online friends with so many unknowns
    D.knowing a person in a love relationship
(4)What's the writer's attitude towards finding love in cyberspace?

    A.Interested.
    B.Not interested.
    C.Positive.
    D.Negative.
