11.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(计算机程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(监督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.
(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people laugh.
B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?
A.The shortage of labor force.
B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
C.The encouragement of government.
D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?
A.Black boxes always go wrong.
B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.组卷:11引用:1难度:0.6 -
12. Twenty years ago,I received an offer for a minor role in a small independent film called Scorpion Spring.I got the script and I didn't read one page of it,not a word. Why?Because I wanted to lubricate(润滑) my creative juices and rid myself of all the theoretical tension I'd been carrying since those acting classes in university.I wanted go back to how I acted when I first started, when I played this guy named David Wooderson, when reading just one line of the script completely unlocked the character for me.I wanted to be back when I was a natural,a free actor.
Two weeks later,I was on the set for the film.I knew my man.I was a cruel drug dealer from Mexico, willing to kill for money.I even looked the part:unshaven, greasy hair, black boots, leather jacket.Time to shoot the scene. No problem.I arrived in character.I didn't introduce myself to the other actors because my man didn't care about them and my man was going to kill them in this scene anyway.Just before we took our marks a production assistant came up to me, "Some script,Mr.McConaughey?"I took them and just shoved them in my pocket without looking at them. All the actors settled onto their marks and prepared for "action."Well,I guess I lost my nerve a little bit because I decided it would be a good idea, right at this moment, just before we rolled the camera,to have a quick glance at the scene and the dialogue. My thinking at the time?If it was written well,I would immediately remember the written lines because obviously that's what my man would say,and if it's not written well, then,I would just be my man and do and say what he would do and say anyway.I unfolded the script—my heart was racing and my mind went blank. One page. Two pages.Three pages. ..Of a long dialogue...In Spanish!
That director never cooperated with me again even after I acquired an Oscars in Hollywood.
Knowing your man doesn't mean knowing Spanish.
(1)How did the author play the character David Wooderson?
A.By taking advantage of his creativity.
B.By imitating the best man in Hollywood.
C.By learning acting theories in university.
D.By following the instructions of the director.
(2)Why did the author have no interaction with other actors on the set?
A.He was not welcome on the set.
B.He didn't care about them at all.
C.He barely knew them on his arrival.
D.He did what the character would do.
(3)What can we learn about Mr.McConaughey?
A.He has a good command of Spanish.
B.He made great achievements in acting.
C.He played a leading role in Scorpion Spring.
D.He became famous for he played Wooderson.
(4)Which statement was the author most likely to agree with?
A.Acting theories matter the most.
B.An actor needs strong mental strength.
C.A minor role is less worth great efforts.
D.Preparation speaks louder than creativity.组卷:7引用:1难度:0.5 -
13.A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below 16℃.Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate.Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world.Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world.
In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources:land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests.People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit.
There are two main reasons for this.Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two.Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world's wood supply.
Rainforests are often called the world's drug store.More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases lies somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.
(1)Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they.
A.reflect more heat into the atmosphere
B.bring about high rainfall throughout the world
C.rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃
D.reduce the effect of heat from the sun on the earth
(2)What does the word "this" underlined in the third paragraph refer to?
A.We will lose much more than we can gain.
B.Humans have begun destroying rainforests.
C.People have a strong desire for resources.
D.Much carbon dioxide comes from burning rainforests.
(3)It can be inferred from the text that.
A.we can get enough resources without rainforests
B.there is great medicine potential in rainforests
C.we will grow fewer kinds of crops in the gained land
D.the level of annual rainfall affects wind patterns
(4)What might be the best title for the text?
A.How to Save Rainforests
B.How to Protect Nature
C.Rainforests and the Environment
D.Rainforests and Medical Development组卷:4引用:3难度:0.4 -
14.Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness.Or,in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time-about eight hours after you wake up-your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day.The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon.Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate.A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps.Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap.Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up.A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long.If you do not have enough time, try a short nap-even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
(1)Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?
A.Because you eat too much for lunch.
B.Because it's hot in summer.
C.Because your body temperature goes down at that time.
D.Because you didn't have a good sleep last night.
(2)What can we learn about "naps" according to the last paragraph?
A.All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.
B.Doctors need to take naps while employers don't.
C.If you take naps every day, you'll never suffer from heart disease.
D.Taking naps regularly is good to people's health.
(3)If you get up at 6:30 am,what is the best time for you to take a nap?
A.About 12:30 pm.
B.About 1:30 pm.
C.About 2:30 pm

(4)What would be the best title for the text?
A.All for a Nap

15.The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?Well, here's some good news:it's likely that no one even noticed.
(1)We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well.Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do,we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day,or give a terrible answer in class.(2)In these moments,it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes.Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.(3)
The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However,in some cases,it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.(4)If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions, then it's time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety.Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.(5)If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family,it will help you be less self-conscious.
A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B.That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
