  • 2.It's an attractive idea:by playing online problem-solving,matching and other games for a few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, verbal (语言的) skills and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate.
This year,in perhaps the biggest real-world test of these programs, neuroscientists (神 经学家) at Canada's Western University gathered 8,563 volunteers globally through Cambridge Brain Sciences,a Toronto-based company that provides assessments to measure healthy brain function.Participants filled out anonline question form about their training habits, opinions about training benefits and which,if any, program they used. Some 1,009 participants reported using brain training programs for about eight months, onaverage, though the length of time ranged from two weeks to more than five years.
Next, the volunteers completed 12 mental tests about memory, reasoning and verbal skills. When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainees on average had no mental edge over the other group in memory, verbal skills and reasoning.Even among those who had used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn't boost thinking abilities above the level of people who didn't use the programs.
"No matter how we dealt with the data,we were unable to find any evidence that brain training was associated with mental abilities," says a researcher. That held true whether the team analyzed participants by age, program used, education or economic situation - all were similar to the group who didn't use the programs. However, brain training may be beneficial when it is connected with real problems in life, researcherssay. The real world may be the best brain trainer. They suggest that we practice those skills in different real-life situations. "That's a much better use of one's time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks."

(1)How were the 1,009 test participants different from the others?

    A.They completed more mental tests.
    B.They showed better mental abilities.
C.They filled an online question form.
    D.They had brain training experiences.
(2)Which of the following best replaces the underlined word "edge" in paragraph 3?

    A.Advantage.
    B.Power.
    C.Illness.
    D.Control.
(3)What do the researchers suggest about brain training?

    A.It should provide scientific data.
    B.It should promote online programs.
C.It should settle problems in life.
    D.It should benefit more researchers.
(4)Which of the following is the best title of the text?

    A.Debate Raised after Research?

  • 3.ALIEN invasions,Kungfu,hidden treasure——they're the topics of a thousand computer games.Now comes a game with a difference:climate change.And the challenge?How to beat it.
Fate of the World, which came out last week, puts the Earth's future in your hands. In this game, you become the head of an international environmental body. You either save the world from the effects of rising greenhouse gas emissions (排放) or let it die by continuing to use emissions-heavy fossil fuels (矿物燃料).
Created by Oxford-based games developer Red Redemption,Fate of the World uses data from real climate models. "There are a range of options including nuclear power and renewable energy. We are not saying one route is the best route," Gobion Rowlands,Red Redemption's founder, told Reuters.
Tom Chatfield, gaming expert and the author of Fun Inc:Why Games Are the 21st Century's Most Serious Business, told British newspaper The Guardian that computer games are uniquely placed to prepare people to deal with climate change. "Two of the problems with environmental issues are time and geography- getting people to care about people on the other side of the earth and problems far in the future, " Chatfield told The Guardian. "But if people can feel and see the gradual development of changing climate,it can be a better way of learning than reading lots of scientific articles. "

(1)What does the author mean by saying "Now comes a game with a difference"?

A.You can save the world through playing the game.
B.There are lots of challenges to beat in this game.
C.We can only use renewable energy in this game.
D.People can experience the change of climate in this game.
(2)What do we know about Fate of the World?

A.It's a combination of Kungfu and treasure hunting.
B.Its data are based on real models.
C.Thanks to it,the environmental problems have been solved.
D.We'd better read more scientific papers instead of playing this game.
(3)What's Tom Chatfield's attitude towards this game?

    A.Neutral.
    B.Favorable.
    C.Disagreed.
    D.Unclear.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title?

    A.Gaming to save nature.
    B.Climate change.
    C.One route is the best.
    D.Fate of the world.

  • 4.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回报)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(缆车)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?

(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?

    A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
    C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?

    A.Choquequirao is older.
    B.Choquequirao is quieter.
    C.Choquequirao is smaller.
    D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?

    A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
    D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?

    A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.

  • 5.The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?Well, here's some good news:it's likely that no one even noticed.
       (1)
We have this experience not only when we make mistakes but also when we perform well.Every time we do something that is a little different from what we usually do,we may assume that everyone around us will notice. The spotlight effect might happen when we make a mistake in a game, have a bad hair day,or give a terrible answer in class.(2)
In these moments,it feels like everyone is watching.
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes.Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.(3)

The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However,in some cases,it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.(4)
If someone is so nervous that they can't make good decisions, then it's time to take action and improve the situation.
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety.Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.(5)
If you fill your mind with thoughts of your friends and family,it will help you be less self-conscious.

A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B.That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
G.It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date,or do a good deed.

第四部分写作 第一节

  • 8.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs.He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time,I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately,in the summer vacation before senior high school,my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips,so she couldn't take care of the garden.I didn't want my father to worry.I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered.I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often,so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning,my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked.Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad,my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen.I was embarrassed and admitted, "Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster.I don't want to disappoint him,so I went to the store and bought some vegetables." My mother smiled, saying, "Honey, you know what is the right thing to do."

My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.______
Feeling guilty,I decided to do the right thing.______
