  • 11.Many animals have adaptations that help them cope with specific environments or lifestyles. These special adaptations are written in the genome(基因组)and passed down from generation to generation. This information can help scientists project into the future as well.Reading an animal's genes can help us predict whether an organism(有机体) might adapt to rapid changes in their environment, like those brought on by climate change,so as to match conservation efforts for at-risk species.
A group of biologists are associated with the Bird Genoscape Project that is concerned with the effects of a changing climate. They investigated this question by using yellow warblers(黄莺)and found that some genes looked different in birds from rainy regions when compared with the same genes in birds living in dry zones. These birds have ideally adapted to their local climates.
But if birds have adapted to their current climate what will happen in the coming years as the climate changes?
Many regions of the US are predicted to get warmer and drier over the next century.Because the biologists had an idea of which genetic change are ideal for each climate, they could calculate how much the genome sequences of yellow warbler populations would have to change over the next 50 years to match the genetic conditions of yellow warblers in future conditions.Yellow warblers in some regions, like the Rocky Mountains, showed very high levels of genomic vulnerability(脆弱性),suggesting they would need many changes in their genomes to keep up with climate change.Meanwhile, yellow warblers from other regions, like the Midwest, had low genomic vulnerability and were less at risk.
When we compared genomic vulnerability to changes in yellow warbler populations over the past 50 years,in areas like parts of California and the Rocky Mountains, which had the highest genomic vulnerability, yellow warbler populations have already declined. This could mean that climate change has already affected these populations, and those effects are likely to become even more severe over the next century.

(1)Why should we study the genes of animals according to the author?

    A.To protect them from extinction.
B.To study the climate change in history.
C.To predict the environment in the future.
D.To know how climate affects their reproduction.
(2)From the comparison between rainy regions and dry regions,we know that
    .
A.birds in rainy areas have worse adaptability
B.the genes of birds are influenced by the environment
C.global warming has limited effects on birds in dry areas
D.the environment birds live in determines the order of their genes
(3)What can we learn about the yellow warblers in the US?

A.Most of them can adapt to the climate change easily.
B.Few of them will exist in Rocky Mountains in the future.
C.Their population is related with the level of genomic vulnerability.
D.The change in their DNA code can help them adapt to climate change.
(4)What's the main idea of the passage?

A.Animals DNA can tell their adaptability.
B.Yellow warblers are highly vulnerable species.
C.Changing is the matter of life and death.
    D.Environment affects animals' genome.

  • 13.Stephen Hawking has said he believes brains could exist independently of the body after people die,but that the idea of a conventional afterlife(传统意义上的死后重生)is a fairy tale.Speaking at the premiere(首映)of a documentary film about his life,Stephen Hawking said: "I think the brain is like a program in the mind, which is like a computer,so it's theoretically possible to copy the brain onto a computer and so provide a form of life after death."
"However, this is way beyond our present scientific and technological level.I think the conventional afterlife is a fairy tale for people afraid of the dark." The author of "A Brief History of Time",who earlier approved of the right for the deadly ill to end their lives as long as safeguards were in place, suffered from motor neurone(运动神经元)disease at the age of 21 and was given two to three years to live.
"All my life 1 have lived with the menace of an early death,so I hate wasting time," Hawking said on Thursday night, using the computer-created voice he controls with a facial muscle and a blink(眨眼)from one eye.The documentary explores a brilliant schoolboy with unclear handwriting who enjoyed the life of Oxford University before illness led to a lifelong desire of discovery about the origins of the universe, which began as a graduate at Cambridge University and has shocked the world.
Hawking's sister Mary says in the film that her brother was highly competitive and curious about everything in a household which friends described as very academic, and explains how she received a toy house as a present when they were children,to which Stephen immediately added electricity.
She said that life with her brother was attractive and exciting. "It's a waste of time arguing with Stephen because he always manages to turn the argument round," she said. The film goes back to his childhood and his student days and shows the scientist, who uses a wheelchair,at home with break It also explores his family life with his first wife,Jane, and their three children, the breakdown of their marriage and his marriage to one of his carers.
Jane appears on camera to explain how the pressures of caring for the children and the increasingly disabled Hawking became even worse once full-time nurses were brought into the home, destroying any privacy(隐私).His second wife and former nurse,Elaine Mason, does not appear in the film, and Hawking introduces their 1995-2007 marriage with a few pictures and a brief description.

  • 14.As a senior,my future is always on my mind.To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test.Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort.Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford's graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future.
It wasn't always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It's the first big step to making your life your own.So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He,too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of:uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending,of course, since he certainly turned out well.
This doesn't mean that students shouldn't attend college, but rather that they shouldn't worry so much. You'll get where you need to go,even if your path is a bit more winding (蜿蜒的) than you'd like.
Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be,which restates the point:don't panic.
One particular part of his speech stayed with me.Steve Jobs quoted (引用) the saying "Stay hungry, stay foolish" and it has become my motto.Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool,no matter how much you've learned or experienced. There is always more to explore.Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.
Steve Jobs's level of success is attainable, and I am to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it's my last and allowing the future to take care of itself,I will do great thjye.aigs.In the last moments of my life,I'll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for.

    (1)The author felt worried when
    .
A.he had to take tests at school
    B.he thought about his future
C.he had lots of sleepless nights
D.he searched for words of wisdom
(2)It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that
    .
    A.Steve Jobs didn't attend college
B.Steve Jobs failed because of his decision
C.the author is a college student
D.the author cares much about his future

A.Courage to drop out of school.
    B.Confidence in defeating Jobs.
    C.Interest in computer industry.
    D.Bravery to face uncertainties.
(4)What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech?

A.Have the desire to learn more.
B.Be content with what they know.

    (5)The passage is mainly about

第Ⅱ卷(50分)第二节(共1小题: 每小题1.5分,满分15分)阅读下列材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式,并将答案填在相应的位置上。

  • 17.It is necessary but difficult for English beginners to memorize new words, and long lists of words seem to make the mission impossible. They are puzzled why they try to memorize words with great efforts but forget them easily. That's why there are often inquiries about how to memorize new words.
        (1)
Here are some tips to help.
        (2)
We too often separate the process of new words memorization from pronunciation. In fact these two can be combined and each will enhance the other.Saying the word to ourselves helps activate aural(hearing) memory, which helps the memory.(3)
The more familiar we are with the word, the greater chance we will have to keep it for the rest of our life.
        Never memorize single English words.(4)
Relate the word to terms we already know, either as synonym or antonym. For example, the word"gargantuan"is similar in meaning to words"gigantic","huge"and"large".Make a sequence of words:"small, medium, large, gigantic, and gargantuan".
Create a mental image of the word that involves strong emotions.Think,"The gargantuan whale is going to swallow me whole".
Learning English words requires action.Complaining how difficult it is to memorize new words will be of little help.(5)
Have a try with ten words a day and you will see what a difference you will make in our English learning.

    A.So take action right now.
B.Speak the word while memorizing it.
C.Memorizing new words is very important.
D.Actually, some have given up learning new words.
E.In fact, learning new words needn't be that difficult.
F.Make as many associations and connections as possible.
G.The sound of word helps us recall the spelling and familiarizes us with the word.
