11.My parents influenced us with the concepts of family, faith and patriotism when I was young.Even though we struggled to make ends meet, they stressed how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities.
I got my first real job when I was ten.My dad,Benjamin, injured his back working in a cardboard - box factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr.Ben's Coiffure.
The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m..To pick up trash,Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower.Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand.It took two to three hours to clean the lot.I'd sleep in the car on the way home.I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime,I acquired discipline and a strong work morality, and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life's competing interests---in my case, school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year of high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping hamburgers,at a fast - food joint while taking a full load of college - prep courses. The hard work paid off.I attended the U.S.Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degree in law and business from Harvard.Later,I joined a big Los Agnates law firm and was elected to the California state assembly. In these jobs and in everything else I've done,I have never forgotten those nights in the parking lot.The experience taught me that there is dignity in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families, that is something we should honor.

12.There's a new frontier in 3 D printing that's beginning to come into focus:food.Recent development has made possible machines that print, cook, and serve foods on a mass scale. And the industry isn't stopping there.
Food production
With a 3 D printer,a cook can print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that - it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy.A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to "re-create forms and pieces" of food that are "exactly the same," freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3 D-printed,rather than farm to table.
Sustainability(可持续性)
The global population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050,and some analysts estimate that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to maintain current levels.Sustainability is becoming a necessity.3 D food printing could probably contribute to the solution. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids (水解胶体) from plentiful renewables like algae(藻类)and grass to replace the familiar ingredients(烹饪原料).3 D printing can reduce fuel use and emissions.Grocery stores of the future might stock "food" that lasts years on end, freeing up shelf space and reducing transportation and storage requirements.
Nutrition
Future 3 D food printers could make processed food healthier.Hod Lipson,a professor at Columbia University, said,"Food printing could allow consumers to print food with customized nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday's bread from the supermarket, you'd eat something baked just for you on demand."
Challenges
Despite recent advancements in 3 D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome.Currently, most ingredients must be changed to a paste(糊状物) before a printer can use them, and the printing process is quite time-consuming,because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways.On top of that, most of the 3 D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are skeptical about 3 D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.
(1)What benefit does 3 D printing bring to food production?
A.It helps cooks to create new dishes.
B.It saves time and effort in cooking.
C.It improves the cooking conditions.
D.It contributes to restaurant decorations.
(2)What can we learn about 3 D food printing from Paragraphs 3?
A.It solves food shortages easily.
B.It quickens the transportation of food.
C.It needs no space for the storage of food.
D.It uses renewable materials as sources of food.
(3)According to Paragraph 4,3 D-printed food.
A.is more available to consumers
B.can meet individual nutritional needs
C.is more tasty than food in supermarkets
D.can keep all the nutrition in raw materials
(4)What is the main factor that prevents 3 D food printing from spreading widely?
A.The printing process is complicated.
B.3 D food printers are too expensive.
C.Food materials have to be dry.
D.Some experts doubt 3 D food printing.组卷:4引用:1难度:0.6 -

Though I would never tell my real father that I think my stepfather is one of the nicest guys I know,he is.I'm happy to make Mike my stepfather.Sometimes,I even call Mike "Dad" because he acts like a dad to me.In my eyes,my stepfather is a really great guy.

14.How to write tip-top articles Articles, like all pieces of writing, can be divided into three sections,a beginning,a middle and an end.
The middle is the biggest part, and from the reader's point of view it's the most important — it is where the content lies.(1)It tends to be just a straightforward list of facts or events in time order.
(2)From the writer's point of view, they need the most thought.Your opening paragraph has to grab the reader's attention and pull them into piece that follows. It must be consistent with article as a whole and flow seamlessly (连贯流畅地) into it.Beginning give you a chance to shine as a writer.(3)
Endings are as important as introduction, and for the same reason. They are your last chance to impress readers and editors.(4)This can be done by summarizing what's gone before or looking towards the future. It can work particularly well stylistically (文体上) if the end mirrors the beginning in some way.
The best way to get good at intros and endings is to read a lot of them in a wide variety of magazines and newspapers.(5)Your version will be different because the subject matter will be different.
All the above considered, you are bound to write excellent and impressive articles.
A.It's also the easiest bit to write.
B.You will keep your writing fresh.
C.Beginnings,by contrast, can be more difficult to do well.
D.If you seize it,the editors may keep coming back to you with more work.

It was an early cold winter morning.Michele was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall it was already nine o'clock.Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe.Although Michele was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up.After all,she didn't expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log,to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver,on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, "Good morning,my dear!" Knowing the voice from her father,Michele was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Michele's father was a seaman, who rarely came back.Working on the sea was really hard.Born in a not-rich family,Michele and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the way they were living. At school, they were the best students throughout the academic career and actively took part in school activities. They became the pride of the school and the envy of the students.
"Good morning,Dad,what's up?" Michele said in an easy tone. "I have been very nice recently,my baby.Today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour.Do remember to take the cake."
Hearing her father's words,Michele felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum's birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the city floor that hadn't been mopped (拖地) for a few days — There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. "Well,Dad,now I'm going to wake Mike up.We will give Mum a surprise!"
Michele hung up the phone with Dad,and hurriedly went to Mike's room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan,Mike readily accepted her idea.
The big cleaning plan began.Michele collected the clothes from sofa and began to do the laundry.Meanwhile,Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home!
