56.When it comes to the most famous 20th century painters of the United States,Grandma Moses should be mentioned, although she did not start painting until she was in her late seventies. As she once said to herself:"I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me." No one could have had a more active old age.
She was born on a farm in New York State, one of five boys and five girls. At 12 she left home and was in domestic service until at 27 she married Thomas Moses, the hired hand of one of her employers. They farmed most of their lives, first in Virginia and then in New York State,at Eagle Bridge. She had ten children,of whom five survived;her husband died in 1927.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child and made embroidery(刺绣)pictures as a hobby, but only changed to oils in old age because her hands became too stiff(僵硬的)to sew and she still wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at the local drugstore and at a market and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought all that she painted.Three of the pictures were exhibited(展览)in the Museum of Modern Art,and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York.Between the 1930's and her death, she produced some 2,000 pictures:careful and lively portrayals of the country life she had known for so long, with a wonderful sense of color and form."I think really hard till I think of something really pretty, and then I paint it." she said.

57.I was in K-Mart.I had made an agreement with my grandchildren that every time I yelled at them,I'd buy them a gift costing at least $5.
As I was looking down the row of toys,a gentleman came around the corner pushing a shopping cart.A woman in her forties backed up and he accidentally ran over her foot.
"Look what you have done!" she screamed out.
"I am very sorry,Ma'am."
The woman reached up and slapped the man as hard as she could. Then she grabbed a Barbie Doll box off the shelf and hit the man on the side of his face. The gentleman grabbed her by the arm to stop her.The woman began to scream.Within several seconds the aisle was crowded with people,as well as a department manager.

The manager called the police. Before long the police showed up,handcuffed (上手铐) the man,and began walking him toward the front entrance.I followed the two officers.
"Would you like to know what really happened?" I asked one of the officers.
"We already have the facts from the woman who was assaulted."
"Do you want the true facts?"
"I think you had best move on down the road."
Looking at the man,I yelled out, "When this is over, you sue (起诉) these men.I'm sure the entire incident is on video somewhere."
The police car stopped. The officer got out of the vehicle.
"What's your version?" he asked me.
In less than three minutes,I told the officer what had really happened.
The police officer returned to his car and began talking with the other officer. The two of them opened their doors, took the man out of the car,and took off the handcuffs. They drove away.
"Well, this has been quite a day," said the man.
I shook the man's hand.I said, "I want to go home now and write about what happened here. The ending is going to say that I shook the hand of a man who was a complete gentleman throughout a very trying situation."
He replied, "Actually,I am a Captain in the Army, stationed at Fort Hood Texas."
I will never forget the large smile on his face.

58.Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s.In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.
The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature,in the book My Two Italies Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age.Even more problematic for him was "which" Italy to "choose," the one he inherited(继承) from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel,or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.
The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的).These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph's desire to "fit in" the American culture.Joseph's visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.
The author's personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy.I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly jye.aiterestjye.aig.In this book,Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects(方言) and the official "Italian" language, and the Southern "question" or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians.
I enjoyed reading this book.It is personal, moving, educational and entertaining.I hope you will enjoy it too!
