21.In fifth grade,on a merry New York City day,my classmates spread across our raggedy classroom carpet. Our teacher had us practicing holiday songs for the upcoming winter show, and with holiday seasonal passion we sang. When we came to one of the Hanukkah (a Jewish festival)songs,a few classmates and I got up and started dancing. We flew around the classroom laughing, our movements becoming irregular as the song progressed. Then one boy stood up and said something along the lines of,"Stop! You're making fun of Jewish people!"
Our student-teacher stopped the song, the boy looked at us angrily as the student-teacher began to lecture,us on our behavior. How we were being disrespectful to the boy's culture-how the dancing was wrong.I was surprised at the outburst and,as a Jewish person myself, did not understand why the boy was offended,or why I was in trouble.I was embarrassed and made to feel disrespected my own culture.
At the beginning of middle school, with the Hanukkah song incident still fresh in my mind,I began to interact more with my Jewish heritage(血统).I started going to Hebrew school.I carefully listened to prayers and committed them to memory. The legitimacy(正统)of my Jewish heritage was questioned by my peers, especially around the Jewish holidays. They would ask if I was "really Jewish," as if there was a standard set of requirements I needed to meet.I didn't have my Bat Mitzvah(犹太成人礼),so that meant I couldn't be truly Jewish.jye.ai said.I asked myself if the accusations were true.It felt like I need to prove my Jewish-ness in some way.I began looking for ways to connect with and represent my Judaism.
When I walked into a store in December.I noticed the abundance of Christmas items, and lack of Hanukkah pieces.Maybe there would be a menorah(烛台)in storefronts,or a few dreidels(陀螺)and chocolate gold coins,if I was lucky.Instead of feeling left out or ignored.I started to make a game out of it.In high school,I would walk the streets of the city and peer into store windows, marking down all the Hanukkah related things I discovered.
(1)Why did the class sing the songs according to paragraph 1?
A.To prepare for the coming performance.
B.To make the angry boy happy.
C.To celebrate a traditional Jewish festival.

22.Like clockwork, nearly every fourth February includes one extra day.February 29th,also known as Leap Day,isn't exactly a holiday.Instead,it's there to make your calendar agree with the earth's rotation (旋转) around the sun.
According to history,Roman emperor Julius Caesar is the "father" of Leap Year.Until he came along, people had used a 355-day calendar, which was 10.25 days shorter than the solar year.Roman officials were supposed to add an extra month every now and then to keep the seasons exactly where they should be.But that didn't work out all that well. When special occasions started shifting into different seasons around 45 BCE,Caesar asked experts for advice and then announced that the empire should use a 12-month,365-day calendar, which he named after himself.Caesar's Julian calendar included a Leap Day every four years.
Though Leap Day makes your calendar match the earth's rotation around the sun,it causes a different kind of problem for leapsters. When should these February 29th babies celebrate their birthdays during the other three-quarters of their lives? Some party on February 28th,while others prefer a two-day celebration that lasts from the last day of February to the first day of March.
Leap Day can be a nuisance in the legal system. In 2006,a court in USA was deciding whether criminal John Melo could be set free two days early since his 10-year sentence included two Leap Days.In the case, the judge decided that since the man was sentenced to prison for years, not days.Leap Day didn't make a bit of difference.
Though a few timekeepers have pushed for calendars that don't include Leap Day,almost all experts and societies agree that Leap Day is the best method to keep the calendar working well.
(1)Why was Leap Day created?
A.To celebrate special occasions.
B.To honor Emperor Julius Caesar.
C.To keep pace with the solar year.
D.To show all the seasons.
(2)What is the problem with the birthday celebration of February 29th babies?
A.It is sometimes delayed.
B.It lasts at least two days.
C.It has to be held every other year.
D.It may take place on different dates.
(3)What does the underlined word "nuisance" in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Joke.
B.Topic.
C.Trouble.
D.Mistake.
(4)What is the attitude of most experts towards Leap Day?
A.Critical.
B.Supportive.
C.Doubtful
D.Cautious.组卷:0引用:1难度:0.5 -
23.Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness.Or,in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time-about eight hours after you wake up-your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day.The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon.Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate.A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps.Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap.Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up.A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long.If you do not have enough time, try a short nap-even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
(1)Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?
A.Because you eat too much for lunch.
B.Because it's hot in summer.
C.Because your body temperature goes down at that time.

(2)What can we learn about "naps" according to the last paragraph?
A.All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.

C.If you take naps every day, you'll never suffer from heart disease.

25.Is your key or phone missing a dozen times a day,or can't you find the TV remote until ten minutes after a favorite show has begun?Such faults might be accompanied by a nagging fear:Is something wrong with me?Probably not. (1)
But for the most part, people can overcome the tendency to misplace things. Here is some advice.
When you put something down, say its location. (2)You'd say, "I'm setting my mouse to the right of my computer." And saying that, either in your mind or out loud, focuses your attention on where you put it,upping the chances that you'll remember its location later.
Make up a song or rhyme.(3)You could make up a rhyme,or sub in your own lyrics to a catchy song. 'Head,Shoulders,Knees and Toes,' and be sung into "My remote is sitting by the lamp.By the lamp."
Take pictures.Ever wander around the parking lot because you can't find your car?Take a picture of your parking spot. The same advice applies to lots of things:Photograph all those spots where you store easy-to-lose objects. When you can't find them, pull up the photo.
(4)That might mean placing a basket by your front door where you drop your keys and wallet immediately upon entering your home,or labelling one drawer as the scissors drawer. Then,at the end of the day, "scan the areas where you've been, find the items that need to be taken back home, and return them to their spots.
Be kind to yourself. It's certainly understandable if you're frustrated with your tendency to misplace things. But if you keep beating yourself up about and start to think that there's something wrong with you,and you get anxious about that. When your thoughts spiral in such a manner, you're even less likely to be able to focus and keep track of your possessions.
