12.One key element of human language is the connection of words with meanings.Scientists had long thought that unlike our words, animal vocalizations(发出的声音) were involuntary, showing the feelings of the animal without communicating any other information. However, over the last forty years, many studies have shown that different animals have different calls with specific meanings.Interestingly, the most impressive are birds.
Many bird species use different alarm calls for different predators(捕食性动物).Japanese tits, which nest in tree holes, have one call that causes their young to lower down to avoid being pulled out of the nest by crows, and another call for tree snakes that sends the young jumping out of the nest completely. And black-capped chickadees change the number of"dees"in their calls to indicate the size and threat of predators.
Besides alarm calls, many bird species use recruitment calls that gather other members of their species.Japanese tits add alarm calls to recruitment calls to create a sort of call to arm, gathering their partner members to attack and drive off a predator. When the birds hear this call, they approach the caller while scanning for danger.
Scientists led by Professor Toshitaka Suzuki of Kyoto University discovered that the order of the combined calls matters to the Japanese tits. When Suzuki's team played a recorded"alarm+recruitment"call to tits,it gets a much stronger response than a"recruitment+alarm"call. However, this could simply be explained by the birds responding to the combined calls without knowing the parts of the combination, but the scientists tried to clarify this question from different angles.
(1)What do we know about animal vocalizations?
A.They are produced unconsciously.
B.They lack meaningful information.
C.They are difficult for scientists to understand.
D.They are connected with particular meanings.
(2)How does the writer develop paragraph 2?
A.By the order of time.
B.By the order of space.
C.By providing examples.
D.By making comparisons.
(3)What's the reaction of Japanese tits to a predator?
A.They jump out of their nests immediately.
B.They change the number of"dees"in their calls.
C.They combine alarm calls with recruitment calls.
D.They approach the predator while looking for danger.
(4)What will the text talk about next?
A.Other reasons for the birds' different responses.
B.Various habits and characteristics of Japanese tits.
C.Diverse combinations of animals' vocalizations.
D.The importance of the"recruitment+alarm"call.组卷:3引用:2难度:0.5 -
13.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回报)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(缆车)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.组卷:128引用:5难度:0.5 -

15. Artificial intelligence has been around for years, but the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT brought generative AI to the focus of many people who hadn't been paying much attention. This has included workers, who've already been touched by the technology.
Some of them admit the technology may have the power to impact workers' daily lives, and some others even fear being replaced by AI. (1).
Expanding daily ideas and solutions
One of ChatGPT's main abilities is that it can function like a personal assistant. It generates text based on natural language processing to give you an accessible, readable response. (2),it can also aid knowledge workers to analyze and expand their work.
There's a lot of potential for workers to step outside of the box with the assistance of generative AI,whether it's improving their daily workflows,or developing long-term projects and goals.
Adding new jobs and careers
One of the primary worries about AI is that it will take workers' jobs at an incredible rate. Some data confirms that, indeed, this technology will affect a wide range of jobs;in March,Goldman Sachs reported that AI could replace almost 300 million full-time jobs. (3)– and that, perhaps, this change could even create new job opportunities.
(4)
While some workers are diving into the technology wholeheartedly, others may find it scary to begin engaging with AI.But experts say its popularity will force workers into using the technology,so they won't fall behind.
Workers being unwilling to use AI could be seen as unable to adapt, says Frey. "I think workers that don't work with AI are going to find their skills become outdated quite rapidly. (5)."
A.Pushing workers into AI fluency
B.Increasing confidence and accuracy
C.Along with providing information and answers
D.AI and machine learning specialists are the fastest growing job fields
E.Experts say that there is no need to worry about being replaced quite yet
F.So one should know what to expect from AI now and in the future workplace
G.Therefore,it's vital to work with AI to stay employed and have up-to-date skills组卷:1引用:1难度:0.5
