11.Seventy years ago,a group of well-known people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness,Richard Burton,Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交响乐团).It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the "Fringe" appeared as a challenge to the official festival.Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge,Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to Edinburgh each summer to perform theatre by little-known writers of plays in small halls to the local people.
Today the "Fringe",once less recognised, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971,and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries.More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

12.Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness.Or,in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time-about eight hours after you wake up-your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy.Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day.The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon.Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate.A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps.Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it!If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap.Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up.A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long.If you do not have enough time, try a short nap-even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
(1)Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?
A.Because you eat too much for lunch.
B.Because it's hot in summer.
C.Because your body temperature goes down at that time.
D.Because you didn't have a good sleep last night.
(2)What can we learn about "naps" according to the last paragraph?
A.All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.
B.Doctors need to take naps while employers don't.
C.If you take naps every day, you'll never suffer from heart disease.
D.Taking naps regularly is good to people's health.
(3)If you get up at 6:30 am,what is the best time for you to take a nap?
A.About 12:30 pm.
B.About 1:30 pm.
C.About 2:30 pm

(4)What would be the best title for the text?
A.All for a Nap
B.Just for a Rest

13.The Trans-Siberian Railway is a single train line that crosses nearly the complete length of Russia, from Moscow to Vladivostok. It covers a total of 5,772 miles, running from Europe to Asia.Unlike the longest flight in the world, which just began transporting passengers in 2018,the Trans-Siberian Railway started its business in 1916.
Anyone who has taken this long journey,or even just part of it,will tell you that it travels at a rather slow speed, passing through some amazing, remote areas of Russia. You don't have to make the full journey without stopping.Instead, you're recommended to get off where there are attractive views, since it stops in some pretty fantastic places. But you certainly can take the full journey non-stop.If you do,the trip will take about 144 hours-six full days!
You can book tickets with travel agencies. You can also make the booking online and tickets will be sent to your hotel or personal address.Children under 4 years old accompanied by adults can travel free, but cannot take up a seat.A child ticket needs to be bought if you want to get a seat for the child.
There are longer railway services in the transportation world, but only one of them is a passenger line as some longer routes transport goods, not travellers. This railway may not be the fastest or the most modern, but it's clearly still an important player in the transportation world!
(1)Why is the longest flight mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To compare the two different ways of transport.
B.To state the Trans-Siberian Railway is out of date.
C.To explain how long the Trans-Siberian Railway covers.
D.To show the great history of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
(2)Which of the following statements about the Trans-Siberian Railway is TRUE?
A.A non-stop journey is suggested.
B.It takes six full days to finish a non-stop trip.
C.Children are always free of charge on this trip.
D.It is the longest railway in the transportation world.
(3)Where does this passage probably come from?
A.A history textbook.
B.A science fiction.
C.A business journal.
D.A travel magazine.组卷:4引用:1难度:0.5 -
14.About three years ago, something terrible happened to me.One day,my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going and got more fish than others. All at once, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm.A huge wave covered our boat and my younger brother fell into the sea. With the wind and waves,we were going in the direction of the whirlpool(漩涡).We were hopeless.Nothing could save us.We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool,I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it.I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way,and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature.Suddenly,we went over the edge.I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. After a while,I became curious about the whirlpool itself.I then made three important observations. The first, the larger the bodies were, the more rapidly they fell;the second, between two objects of equal extent(面积),round objects fell down less rapidly;and the third, between two objects of the same size, objects shaped like a tube fell down more slowly. So I tied myself to a barrel to help me float.I tried to make my brother understand, but he was too frightened and stayed in the heavy boat.Without waiting,I jumped into the sea to try and escape.
It turned out that I made the right decision. Some time after I left the boat, with my brother in it,it was pulled into the bottom of the whirlpool.Soon after that, the whirlpool became less wild. Then the sky was clear, the wind calmer, and the moon was shining.I was still tied to the barrel and the waves soon carried me to an area where the other fishermen were.In the end,a boat picked me up.I was very tired. The fishermen were my old friends. When I told them my story, they did not believe it.Now I have told you,and I cannot expect you to believe me any more than the fishermen did.
(1)What happened on our way home from the islands?
A.We were caught in a storm.
B.We got more fish than before.
C.We were risking going to the islands.
D.My two brothers and I fell into the sea.
(2)What can you infer from the story?
A.The writer cared more about nature than his life.
B.The writer took advantage of natural rules and survived.
C.The writer's two brothers finally died in the storm.
D.The writer didn't expect the readers to believe his story.

19.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Alan and the other campers sat around the fire, talking and laughing. It would be Alan's first night in a tent, and he was excited and a little nervous.
Then, the conservation area officer spoke, "Much of the wildlife in this region comes out only at night. So after supper, let's start a night watch.Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a different world."
"Isn't it dangerous?" someone asked.
"No,it's quite safe," the officer said. "There are no dangerous animals.Any volunteers?"
The kid who'd sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered.
Alan sat still.
Then one of the girls raised her hand.
"If a girl could do it,I could, too," Alan thought. He volunteered.A few more kids raised their hands. Then the officer explained, "This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed,the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of the watcher is to keep the fire going. After thirty minutes,he or she wakes up the next person.Do you still want to volunteer?"
Alan nodded but felt a little nervous.Sleeping in a tent with other campers sounded OK,but the idea of being alone in the dark made him afraid.
The officer showed the order of the watch.
At ten past two in the evening,Alan found himself sitting by the fire,in a great world of darkness. He had never been so afraid.Alan had to turn off his flashlight(手电筒) because he had used it too often. He looked at the stars and the rising moon.It wasn't as dark as he'd thought it would be.He took comfort in that and tried to relax a little.
Looking around,Alan thought he saw a large bird flying down through the air and wondered if it was an owl(猫头鹰).He had seen small paw prints on the sand by the river.
Paragraph 1:
Then there was a noise.__________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Alan felt a rush of excitement._______________________________________________组卷:12引用:4难度:0.6
