Perhaps it is strange that China's greatest sea explorer( 探险家) grew up in the mountains. The young man was born around 1371 in a family in Yunnan province, several months' trip from the closest sealine. He was brought to serve Zhu Di,the future Ming emperor or Yongle at early age.The young man was given the name of Zheng He by the emperor Yongle to reward his fantastic war skills.Yongle pushed hard for Chinese sailings in the southern sea and the Indian Ocean. He expected to find an able headman for his naval(海军的) fleet(舰队) to reach out for ocean. The man he chose was Zheng He.Zheng He served alongside the emperor and led seven journeys that set up China as Asia's strongest naval power in the 1400s to make China and the world understand each other better.
Zheng He's seven great journeys happened between 1405 and 1433.On the first one,the fleet numbered 255 ships,62 of which were big treasure ships,or baochuan. It was said that those treasure ships reached 140-meter long, unbelievably huge at that time. There were also mid-sized ships such as machuan, used for transporting horses, and a lot other ships carrying soldiers, sailors, doctors and map designers. The ships left Nanjing, sailing south to Fujian, stopped in Vietnam(越南),made their way to Java(爪哇国),lastly rested in Malacca(马六甲),waiting for the winter winds that could blow toward the west. Then they continued to present-day Sri Lanka(斯里兰卡) in southern India, where the first three journeys ended. The fourth reached Persian Gulf(波斯湾).Zheng He revisited places in Southeast Asia and India during the fifth and sixth. And the final entered the waters of the Red Sea,then turning and sailing as far as Kenya(肯尼亚) in Africa.
The journeys ended suddenly in 1433 during the years of Xuande. It seemed the fights between the Ming and the Mongols caused the emperor to focus more on the inland in the north instead of the sea journeys in the south. The great headman died shortly after the seventh and last of the journey.Zheng He stands out in China's history because of his unstoppable spirit. The journeys also helped introduce Chinese culture to the world.Today China's mapping on the South China Sea is almost exactly the one taken six centuries ago by Zheng He and his amazing fleets.
