As far back as I can remember, the large pickle(泡菜)jar sat on the floor beside the dresser in my parents' bedroom. When he got ready for bed,Dad would empty his pocket and toss his coins into the jar.As ar small boy I was always fascinated at the sounds the coins made as they were dropped into the jar. They landed with a merry jingle to a dull thud(沉闷声)as the jar was filled.I used to kneel down on the floor in front of the jar and admire the copper and silver circles that shone like a pirate's treasure when the sun poured through the bedroom window.
When the jar was filled,Dad would take it to the bank.Stacked neatly in a small cardboard box,the coins were placed between Dad and me on the seat of his old truck. Each and every time,Dad would look at me hopefully."Those coins are going to keep you put of the textile mill, son. You are going to do better than me."Also, each and every time,as he slid the box of rolled coins across the counter at the bank towards the cashier,he would grin proudly."These are for my son's college fund. He'll never work at the mill all his life like me."
We would always celebrate each depositby stopping for an ice-cream cone.I always got chocolate.Dad always got vanilla. When the clerk at the ice-cream parlor handed Dad his change,he would show me the few coins nestled in his palm."When we get home,we'll start filling the jar again."
He always let me drop the first coins into the empty jar.As they rattled around with a brief, happy jingle,we grinned at each other."You'll get to college on pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters,"he said."But you'll get there.I'll see to that."
Years later,I finished college, landed a job in a big city, met my wonderful wife Susan and had our daughter Jessica.

【答案】Once, when we visited my parents,I led Susan into the bedroom. There silently sat the old pickle jar, beside the dresser, half full."Dad is a man who are always of few words. He never lectures me on the values of determination, perseverance and faith."Stroking the jar affectionately,I shared with Susan my boyhood recollections of how Dad's pickle jar had taught me all those virtues far more eloquently than the most flowery words could have done. The picture was still vivid in my mind that Dad continued to doggedly drop his coins into the jar however rough things got in those years.
Looking at the jar with the shining coins,Susan's eyes were misted with tears.Suddenly, her eyes lit up.She dug down into her pocket, pulled out a fistful of coins and gently placed them in my palms .Our eyes locked.I immediately knew what she meant.I didn't say a word, but dropped the coins into the jar and the familiar jingles rang.At that very moment,Dad slipped quietly into the room, with Jessica toddling after him curiously. He smiled to us, "For Jessica."I knew he was feeling the same emotion we felt.None of us could speak.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters,my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention.I was happy and energetic.I understood that no matter how poor a person was,he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics.By the time I was sixteen,I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me,but often told me "Dream is priceless".However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job.I was offered ﹩12.25 per hour.Compared with the average ﹩3.5,that was a big sum.I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mojye.air.The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule.I didn't dare to tell my coach,I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed,you have to lie in it. "I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all,my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

2.Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?
"Oh,yes…,but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive.
As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock?she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

3. One day, when I was a first-year student in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris.It looked like he was carrying all of his books.I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd(书呆子)."
I had quite a weekend planned(parties and a football game with my friends),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.As I was walking,I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.He looked up,and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.So I jogged over to him,and as he crawled around looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes.As I handed him his glasses,I said,"They are bad guys! They really should be punished."He looked at me and said,"Hey,thanks!"There was a big smile on his face.It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before.I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
