The master of English education in China just celebrated his 100th birthday in April.He is a great man who has had a great influence on foreign-language education.
    In 1950，Chen started teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University （BFSU）. （1）He was known for writing English textbooks. As the "Professor of Three Ups"，he insisted（坚持） on "standing up" and "speaking up" in his classes.He always stood to teach and spoke loudly.But，when class was over，he would "shut up" at once.
    Chen's good teaching impressed students.Li Jinzhao，one of Chen's students and a teacher at BFSU now，remembered that Chen liked role-playing and singing. （2）他的课堂如此生动使得学生变得对英语更感兴趣了。
    In the 1980s，most teachers in China used the "teacher speaks，students listen" model of English education. （3）但是陈琳鼓励他的学生多说、多练习。 He also guided students to master different kinds of language skills，including listening，speaking，reading，and writing.
    （4）In 1999，Chen Lin led his team to develop English curriculum standards. Before that，English teaching goals from primary school to university were not well-connected.But the curriculum standards（课程标准） changed the situation，making English education work like "one package".
    After retirement（退休），Chen continues working.He reads every day. （5）He also writes articles about how to improve English education. "I have been a teacher all my life，and I want to be an English teacher again in my next life." said Chen Lin.
