The birds were singing, and a slight breeze was blowing as I walked out onto the front yard of the house we lived in on Stuart s Lane, near Eureka,Missouri. It was a cool fall morning, and I was a St.Louis County Police Officer. My family and I lived in a house owned by my friend Dr.Wallace Stuart. He had built a stone castle near the house many years earlier and had later moved away.People continually trespassed(擅自进入)on the property and broke into the castle,so he gave me free rent to watch over it.
If anyone went up to the castle at night, our dog Samoa would begin to howl (嗥叫) like a wolf, and I would get dressed, get my gun, badge,ID,and a flashlight, and she and I would go to the dark castle.I trusted Samoa completely, and she would not make a sound until we were in a room with the trespjye.aisers.As I turned my flashlight on,she would automatically give out her blood-curling howl, which even caused the boys or men in the group to scream and there was never an incident where they tried to attack me.
On this particular morning,Samoa had begun howling, which usually meant we had trespassers;however, this time, she was looking toward the top of a hill.I examined the hillside carefully for anything she might be howling at,and then I heard a strange sound. It was like a huffing and snorting (呼哧呼哧的) sound a bear would make.I knew there weren't any bears running free in St.Louis County, but I remembered the Endangered Wolf Center, which was within a mile and a half of our house.I wondered if they might also care for some bears, and possibly one escaped.By this time my wife had heard the sound, and she joined me on the front yard.As we stood there, she agreed the noise did sound like an angry bear.

【答案】As the noise seemed to be coming nearer,I decided to play it safe and took the police-issued shot gun from my car.I didn't mean the bear any harm as long as it didn't try attacking my family and my dog,but I was prepared to "do battle" if necessary. The fur on her back standing up,Samoa became more unsettled, prepared to save us from this awful creature. The intense waiting was like something out of a scary movie.I didn't have to wait long before a huge shape began to grow larger and larger as it topped the hill.
Suddenly the "animal" was upon us,but not on the ground with us,for this bear turned out to be a hot air balloon. What we thought was sounds of a bear was the fuel being fed to the burners by the pilot. As we stood there watching the balloon fly just above us,the people in the basket waved down to us,and we returned the gesture, much in embarrassment.I was sure they wondered why a St.Louis County Police Officer was standing there with a shotgun in his hand and whether I might be planning to shoot them down.

1.Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?
"Oh,yes…,but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive.
As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock?she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters,my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention.I was happy and energetic.I understood that no matter how poor a person was,he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics.By the time I was sixteen,I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me,but often told me "Dream is priceless".However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job.I was offered ﹩12.25 per hour.Compared with the average ﹩3.5,that was a big sum.I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mojye.air.The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule.I didn't dare to tell my coach,I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed,you have to lie in it. "I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all,my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

3. One day, when I was a first-year student in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris.It looked like he was carrying all of his books.I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd(书呆子)."
I had quite a weekend planned(parties and a football game with my friends),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.As I was walking,I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.He looked up,and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.So I jogged over to him,and as he crawled around looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes.As I handed him his glasses,I said,"They are bad guys! They really should be punished."He looked at me and said,"Hey,thanks!"There was a big smile on his face.It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before.I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
