"Father of hybrid rice （杂交水稻）" Yuan Longping passed away at 13：07 pm in Changsha of Hunan province.Dr.Yuan helped China work a great wonder — feeding nearly one-fifth of the world's population with less than 9 percent of the world's total land. （1）他是中国最伟大的科学家之一，but he still considered himself as a farmer.
    Dr.Yuan graduated from Southeast Agricultural College in 1953.As a young man，he saw the great need for increasing the rice output （产量）. （2）At that time，hunger was a serious problem in many parts of the countryside. Dr.Yuan searched for a way to increase rice harvest without expanding （扩大） the area of the fields.In 1950，Chinese farmers could produce only fifty million tons of rice.（3）In 1974，he became the first in the world to grow rice with a high output. By the end of last year，farmers in more than 40 countries had planted more than 7 million hectares （公顷） of the crop. （4）多亏了他和他的团队，人们已经过上了更好的生活。Now more than 60% of the rice production in China each year is from this hybrid strain.
    Dr.Yuan was quite satisfied with his life，but he didn't care about being famous.He had two dreams.The first dream was that people could enjoy the cool from the shade of the rice which was strong and tall. （5）The second dream was that the whole world could plant the rice he developed and all the people were not hungry.
