Pete Richards was the loneliest man in town on the day Jean Grace opened his door.Pete's shop had come down to him from his grandfajye.air.The little front window was set out with several old-fashioned things.
On one winter afternoon a child was standing there. With her forehead against the glass, she kept her eyes wide open and studied each thrown-out treasure,as if she were looking for something quite special. Finally, she straightened up with a satisfied air and entered the store.
"Sir," she began, "would you please let me look at that string of blue beads (珠子) in the window?"
"They're just perfect," the child continued, completely to herself. "Will you wrap (包装) them up pretty for me,please?" Pete looked at her carefully and said, "Are you buying these for someone?" The girl replied, "They're for my big sister. She takes care of me.You see, this will be the first Christmas since mother died.I've been looking for the most wonderful present for my sister."
"How much money do you have?" asked Pete carefully. She untied the knots (结) in a handkerchief and poured out a handful of pennies on the counter. "I emptied my bank," she explained simply.Pete Richards looked at her thoughtfully. He could see the price tag (标签),but the little girl couldn't.
"Just a minute," he said, and turned towards the back of the store.Over his shoulder he called, "What's your name?" He was very busy about something.
"Jean Grace." When Pete turned to where Jean Grace waited,a package lay in his hand, wrapped in fresh red paper, which looked very beautiful. "Here you are," he said shortly. "Don't lose it on the way home." She smiled happily at him over her shoulder as she ran out of the door.Through the window he watched her go,while loneliness flooded his thoughts.

【答案】10 days later,a young woman hurried in.Surprised for no obvious reason,he realized that she looked familiar.Without speaking, she drew from her purse a package loosely unwrapped in its red paper. While Pete was thinking when he saw the young woman, she showed the string of blue beads, laying lighting again before Pete. "Did this come from your shop? Can you remember who it was that you sold it to?" she asked.
Pete told her that it was a small girl whose name was Jean. "She paid the biggest price anyone can ever pay.She gave all she had," Pete added and folded the red paper back into its creases, rewrapping the little package just as neatly as before. The sound of the distant striking, the little package lying on the counter, the question in the eyes of the girl and the strange feeling of renewal struggling unreasonably in the heart of the man had come to him because of the love of a child.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters,my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention.I was happy and energetic.I understood that no matter how poor a person was,he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics.By the time I was sixteen,I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me,but often told me "Dream is priceless".However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job.I was offered ﹩12.25 per hour.Compared with the average ﹩3.5,that was a big sum.I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mojye.air.The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule.I didn't dare to tell my coach,I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed,you have to lie in it. "I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all,my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

2.Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily.
She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles?
"Oh,yes…,but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing.I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive.
As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl,do you really think so?I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you?Have you expressed your gratitude to her?"
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock?she remembered Mother's familiar face and weathered hands. "Why did I not think of that?A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

3. One day, when I was a first-year student in high school,I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kris.It looked like he was carrying all of his books.I thought to myself,"Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd(书呆子)."
I had quite a weekend planned(parties and a football game with my friends),so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.As I was walking,I saw a gang of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.He looked up,and I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him.So I jogged over to him,and as he crawled around looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes.As I handed him his glasses,I said,"They are bad guys! They really should be punished."He looked at me and said,"Hey,thanks!"There was a big smile on his face.It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out,he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to a private school before.I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
