2．In 1926，US automaker Henry Ford shortened its employees' workweek from six eight-hour days to five，with no pay cuts.It's something workers and labor unions had been calling for.Ford wasn't responding to worker demands；he was being a businessman.He expected increased productivity and knew workers with more time and money would buy and use the products they were making.It was a way of encouraging consumerism and productivity to increase profits，and it succeeded.
Since standardization of the 40-hour workweek in the mid-20th century，everything has changed but the hours.If anything，many people are working even longer hours，especially in North America.This has a severe influence on human health and well-being，as well as the environment.Until the Second World War，it was common for one person in a family，usually the oldest male，to work full-time.Now，women make up 42 percent of the world's full-time workforce.Technology has made a lot of work unnecessary，with computers and robots doing many tasks previously performed by humans.
Well into the 21st century，we continue to work the same long hours as 20th century laborers，using up ever more of Earth's supply to produce more goods that we must keep working to buy，use and replace in a seemingly endless cycle of hard work and consumption.It's time to pause and consider better ways to live like shifting from fossil-fueled lifestyles with which our consumer-based workweeks are connected.
The UK think tank，New Economics（经济学）Foundation，argues that a standard 21-hour workweek would address a number of interconnected problems："overwork，unemployment，over-consumption，high carbon emissions，low well-being，and the lack of time to live sustainably，to care for each other，and simply to enjoy life".

3．In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life，researchers asked a group of students to write about their "true self".Another group of students were asked to write about their "everyday self" and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore.After the writing task，the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life.
The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays.Their assumption（设想）is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self，the more likely one authentically （真实地） connects with that sense of self.Not surprisingly，for those writing about their everyday selves or about the campus bookstore，the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life.However，when people wrote about their true selves，the more detailed the essay was，the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life.
To live a meaningful life，then，make sure you are in touch with yourself.If you don't follow your own values and dreams，you are most probably following values set by others.And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream.As some wise-cracker has put it，it is better to be yourself，as everyone else is already taken.
Meaningfulness is about connection.While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate，caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about，you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself.Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell.Only by knowing what you are，can you start to authentically connect with others.
So，set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person，what are your most important values，and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life.Then figure out how you could make that true self more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work.
