一、阅读理解

  • 1.The Worlds' Best Bookshops There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that travelers can bring you.
     Daikanyama T-site | Tokyo
It is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building's beautiful, crisscrossed architecture.Once you've had your fill of wandering three floors' worth of bookshelves, there's the bar,the coffee shop,or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer.Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages.I could have stayed hours here.
     City Lights | San Francisco
The three-storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts.It hosts events and readings and runs a non-profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and ideas in ljye.aierature.It's opposite Vesuvio,a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat-generation writers and artists.
     Shakespeare and Company | Paris
I made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English-language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors-heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself,or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.
     Hutatma Chowk | Mumbai
A few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country.I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp-covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk(Martyrs' Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for.To me,those well-thumbed (翻旧了的)books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.

  • 2.I was brought up in the British, stiff upper lip style.Strong feelings aren't something you display in public. So,you can imagine that I was unprepared for the outpouring of public grief at a Chinese funeral.
My editorial team leader died recently after a short illness. He was 31.The news was so unexpected that it left us all shocked and upset.A female colleague burst into tears and cried sadly at her desk.Somehow we got through the day's work. The next day was the funeral.
Our big boss stepped forward to deliver a eulogy(悼词)and was soon in tears. She carried on,in Chinese of course, but at the end said in English: "There will be no more deadlines for you in heaven." Next came a long-term colleague who also dissolved in tears but carried on with her speech despite being almost overcome by emotion. Then a close friend of the dead man paid tribute, weeping openly as he spoke.Sorrow is spreading.Me and women were now sobbing uncontrollably. Finally, the man's mother, supported between two women, addressed her son in his coffin. She almost collapsed and had to be held up.We were invited to step forward to each lay a white rose on the casket. Our dead colleague looked as if he was taking a nap.At the end of the service I walked away from the funeral stunned at the outpouring of emotion.
In the UK,families grieve privately and then try to hold it together and not break down at a funeral. Here in China it would seem that grieving is a public affair. It strikes me that it is more releasing to cry your eyes out than try to keep it bottled up for fear of embarrassment, which is what many of us do in the West.
Afterwards,a Chinese colleague told me that the lamenting(哀悼)at the funeral had been restrained(克制)by Chinese standards. In some rural areas, she said, people used to be paid to mourn noisily. This struck me like something out of novel by Charles Dickens. But we have all seen on TV scenes of grief-stricken people in Gaza and the West Bank,in Afghanistan,Iraq and the relatives of victims of terrorist bombings around the world.Chinese grief is no different.I realized that it's the reserved British way of mourning that is out of step with the rest of the world.

  • 3.Brenda Linson never goes anywhere without an empty glasses case.It is as important to her as her purse.Yet,she doesn't wear glasses. The reason she can't do without it is because she can't read and she can't write. If ever she gets into any situation where she might be expected to do either of these things, she fishes around in her bag for the case, finds it's empty, and asks the person concerned to do the reading for her.
Brenda is a capable person and until a few months ago hardly anybody knew she was illiterate. Her husband didn't know and her children didn't know. The children still don't.
She doesn't read them stories, but then their father doesn't either,so they find nothing surprising in the fact.Similarly, they just accept that Dad is the one who writes the sick notes and reads the school reports. Now Brenda can skillfully get the elder boy to read any notes from school simply by asking,"What's that all about, then?"
She did have a few tactics (办法)for hiding her difficulty. For example, never stay near a phone at work,in case she might be required to write something down. But it's not difficult for illiterates to cover the truth.Literacy is taken for granted and people just don't notice the giveaway signs.
Brenda's husband never guessed the truth in 10 years of marriage. For one thing,he insists on handling all domestic mails and bills himself. An importer of Persian carpets,he travels a lot and so is not at home much. While he's away,Brenda copes with any situations by explaining that she can't do anything until she's discussed it with her husband.
Brenda was very successful in her job until recently. For the last 5 years she had worked as a waitress at a private club, and had eventually been promoted to head waitress. She kept the thing a secret there too,and got over the practical difficulties somehow.

(1)From the passage, what do we know about Brenda Linson?

A.She couldn't read and write so she felt very inconvenient.
B.Even though she was illiterate, she lived a happy life.
C.Her illiteracy caused her a lot of practical difficulties.
D.By using tactics, she had covered her illiteracy for many years.
(2)What would Brenda do if she received a mail from the family insurance agent?

A.She would leave it to her husband.
B.She would ask her son to read it for her.
C.She would reply to it when she had her glasses.
D.She would discuss it with her husband and answer it.
(3)Which of the following can best describe Brenda?

    A.A deceitful woman.
    B.A smart woman.
    C.A successful woman.
    D.A considerate woman.
(4)What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Illiteracy will result in a lot of difficulties.
B.Illiteracy is not a problem as long as you can cover it.
C.One can always find ways to overcome difficulties.
D.You can be successful in your job even though you are illiterate.

Early in the morning, having assembled outside the school gate,we head straight to Mount Tai.We set out for the top in high spirits when the moment we arrived at the foot of the mountain. In a course of the climb,we cooperated with each other to pass the rocky and steep areas.Laughing and cheering,we eventually reached the summit, which we greeted by the bright sunshine and fresh air.Viewing from the top,the city was beautiful.Bathed in the warm sunshine,we entertained us with stories, songs, dances and game.
This event was extremely beneficial for not only did we take a break from our heavy school workload, but we also learned how to cooperate. Therefore,we strongly suggest that similar events are held every year!
