2.Researchers have found that men and women consumed 15 percent more calories when looking at their phones while eating. They also ate more fatty food. The groundbreaking study suggests that staring at a phone screen may distract diners from how much food they are actually eating.
"It may prevent the correct understanding of the brain over the amount of food taken in," said researchers who filmed 62 volunteers eating alone. The men and women, aged 18 to 28,were invited to help themselves to a choice of food - ranging from healthy options to soft drinks and chocolate - until they were satisfied. In three trials, the volunteers were recorded eating with no distractions, using a Smartphone or reading a magazine. On average, the volunteers ate 535 calories without the distraction of a Smartphone but 591 when using a mobile. Those in the sample who were classed as overweight ate 616 calories while using their phones.
When in possession of their mobiles, the volunteers also consumed 10 percent more fatty foods. They also ate more when reading a magazine. "Smartphone use during a meal increased calorie and fat intake," said Márcio Gilberto Zangeronimoa,a lead author of the study - carried out at the Federal University of Lavras in Brazil and University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netjye.airlands.He added: "Tablets and smart phones have become the main 'distracters' during meals, even early in childhood,so it is important to pay attention to how this may impact food choices.A distracter prevents the brain correctly understanding the amount of food ingested." 3.Tracking wildlife is a tough job.Take the case of a one-eared leopard named Pavarotti. "He was a very big beautiful male, and he had a very, very deep, deep roar, and so they named him after Pavarotti."
One day,Kasim Rafiq,a wildlife biologist at Liverpool John Moores University got up at the crack of dawn, followed Pavarotti 's tracks and tried to find him. However, the tracks took he off road and the wheel of his car was stuck in the mud.He wasted several hours getting it out.And on the way back to camp,he bumped into some local tour guides and their guests, who'd had way better luck spotting Pavarotti that morning.Rafiq then realized that tourist wildlife sightings might be an untapped source of information about wild animals.
So he and his team worked with a travel agency in Botswana to analyze 25,000 tourist photographs of wildlife. They used those as sightings of lions, leopards, and wild dogs. They then compared those data to the estimates they made with traditional wildlife biology tactics:stuff like camera traps, track surveys, and "call-in stations" - where they play sounds of distressed animals in the middle of the night and see whopops by.
It turned out that the estimates from tourist photos were just as good as those from traditional methods. The idea is not to put wildlife researchers out of a job. "The reality is there's so many interesting things we still have to find out about these large animals and so many conservation projects that need to be carried out that we don't have the time or resources to do them all." And the researchers would have missed the cats without the citizen science data.
