  • 7.I am a self-taught maker of gingerbread(姜饼) houses. It wasn't something I ever did growing up.In fact, gingerbread houses struck me as an awful lot of work for little return,a baking(烘焙) project that would eat up the time I could spend doing something more productive.
But,five years ago,I saw a sign at the library announcing a gingerbread house contest(比赛).I went home and told my kids and we made a house from the start. It took all day and we were covered in icing, but I was blown away by the final product. It was so satisfying to see a little house, decorated with colorful candy.I delivered the house to the library, where it won first place in the family group, and we got a generous $100 in gift certificates(礼券) for local business.
Every year since then,my kids and I have attended the gingerbread house contest, and every year we've won the family group. Our houses are not very beautiful;the only thing that sets them apart is the fact that we make the gingerbread from the start.Everyone else uses store-bought ready-made pieces, which makes the houses look the same.Ours,by contrast,is misshapen and leans;my husband refers to it jokingly as"the slanty shanty(倾斜的小屋)".
If you haven't made a gingerbread house before,I highly recommend you give it a try. What better way to use that time than making something great with your kids? What I hope, too,is that this tradition will give my kids a way to make it feel like Christmas,no matter where they go in life.My hope is that they'll make gingerbread houses wherever they go in life and always think of home.

(1)How did the author feel about making gingerbread houses at first?

    A.It needed talent to learn.
    B.It was relaxing and interesting.
    C.It was time-wasting and unproductive.
    D.It made her family connected.

    B.Her kids' encouragement.
    C.The meaning behind gingerbread houses.
    D.Competition among gingerbread businesses.
(3)What was special about the author's gingerbread house?

    A.It had a surprising taste.
    B.It had a store-bought style.
C.It was made with the best shape.
D.It was completely made by her family.
(4)Why does the author keep the gingerbread house making tradition?

A.To remind her kids of the meaning of different festivals.
B.To make her kids keep family in their minds.

  • 8.When it comes to technology, adults won't be able to keep up with their children. It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million people, but it took only 20 years for the phone to reach the same number, and 13 years for the television. However,it took Facebook 3.6 years and Twitter only needed 88 days.Over the last 15 years, digital communication has brought in more changes than the printing press did in 1570.And those most likely to use them in this world are teenagers, whose brains appear to have a great ability to adapt to the world around them, according to Dr.Jay Giedd,a brain expert.
We are now discovering that our brains during the teenage years are still flexible(灵活的).Having a more flexible brain means that certain functions of it,such as the ability to make long-term decisions, haven't developed yet, which may also explain why we spend a long period living under the protection of our parents rather than leaving home at the age of 12 or 13. This also means that the teenage brain can adapt to new technology, allowing teenagers to keep up with the increasing pace(速度) of digital technology, giving them an advantage when doing different tasks.
As they look at these screens, they're dealing with information. There are concerns about how social media is affecting the way in which the brain learns to socialize.Giedd says that a lot of what goes on inside our brains is jye.ai.Social interactions are being changed by technology-you could have hundreds of friends, all of whom are real people that you interact with and scientists aren't sure whether we'll be able to develop the same skills using social media.
There is an advantage to the growing digital trend(趋势):YouTube shows that teenagers all over the world are watching the same things and laughing at the same jokes, showing that they are more global-minded than teenagers in the past. They are more open to other cultures, other countries, and other people.

(1)How many years did it take for television to reach 50 million people?

    A.38 years.
    B.20 years.
    C.15 years.
    D.13 years.
(2)What does the underlined word"This"in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Teenagers' brains are flexible.
B.Teenagers are protected by their parents.
C.Teenagers are good at doing different tasks.
D.Teenagers' abilities to make decisions haven't developed.
(3)What does the trend of using YouTube show?

    A.Teenagers prefer to socialize online.
B.Teenagers spend much time on social media.
C.Teenagers are now more open-minded than those in the past.
D.Teenagers are more likely to be attracted by the Internet than grown-ups.
(4)What may be the best title for the text?

    A.Concerns about social media influence
B.Teenage brains in the digital world
    C.Teenager-related technologies
    D.Development of teenage brains

  • 9.For ten years,I have spent my Monday evenings attending rehearsals(排练) for my amateur(业余的) choir.Mondays are not my favorite day,and I often arrive feeling bad,but by the end of the rehearsal,I usually feel energized. The singing does me good.So do the people.I wouldn't describe my choir members as close friends. We exchange brief chats, smiles and jokes-but that is enough for me to feel better about the world.
There is no choir practice now.I miss it.In lockdown,I do not feel short on emotional support, but I do feel short of friendly faces and casual(随便的) conversations.Another way of putting this is that I miss my"weak ties".
One way to think about any person's social world is that you have an inner circle of people whom you often talk to and feel close with, and an outer circle of people whom you see sometimes.Mark Granovetter,a sociology professor at Stanford University, named these categories(种类)"strong ties"and"weak ties".
Experts had thought that a person's happiness depended mainly on the quality of their relationships with their close friends and family.Granovetter showed that quantity(数量) mattered, too. He found that for new information and idea, weak ties are more important to us than strong ones.
Granovetter surveyed 282 Boston-based workers and found that most of them got their jobs through someone they knew. But only a few got the job through a close friend;84%got their job through those weak-tie relationships. As Granovetter pointed out,the people whom you spend much 4 time with swim in the same pool of information as you do.We depend on friendly outsiders to bring us news of opportunities.
So we should continue to find ways to develop weak-tie relationships in lockdown. We can use social media to reach out to people we don't know well for light, but meaningful communications. We can also make more weak-tie-style conversations with our strong ties. The goal is to let others know you are thinking of them without asking for a great deal of time or energy.

(1)What makes the author happy during his Monday evenings 'choir practice?

A.His meeting with a close friend.
    B.The praise from choir members.
C.The progress he has made in singing.
    D.His communication with choir members.
(2)What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The changes of people's social world.
    B.What"strong ties"and"weak ties"are.
    C.The different ways people communicate.
    D.Why interpersonal relationships are important.
(3)What did Granovetter think of weak-tie relationships?

A.They are easier to build than strong ones.
B.They offer more benefits than strong ones.
C.They can bring new information and ideas.
D.They make little difference to people's happiness.
(4)What does the author suggest people do to have weak-tie contacts in lockdown?

A.Use social media to make new friends.
B.Draw outsiders into a full online conversation.
C.Make strong-tie-style chats with distant friends.
D.Have more brief conversations with family members.

  • 10.As Picasso once said,"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."(1)
We might paint, write or play an instrument as kids. However,as adults,we find that responsibilities stand in the way of being creative. But is being creative really all that important?
    (2)
According to studies, being creative in any way can help fight against negative(消极)emotions. It helps build problem- solving skills and increases productivity and confidence.(3)

Next comes the really big question:how can you become more creative?Pull out a notebook or a piece of paper and just draw or paint, with no goal in mind. This gets all kinds of connections in the brain wjye.aiking.Or you can get some exercise.A study at Albion College actually discovered that a tired mind can be a more creative mind. (4)

One of the main obstacles(阻碍) to being creative is called"fear of failure".In other words, some people think they won't be good at writing, drawing, etc.,so they just don't try.How do you conquer this fear? (5)
For example, you might think failure is painting a picture that you see as ugly. However, what if "failure"was actually not painting anything at all?

    A.For many,this rings true.
B.The short answer to this question is:yes.
    C.Try to discover a new world,and a new you.
