The Argentine man said he planned the trip in just 24 hours after learning that flights to his home country had been canceled.Ballestero, who lives in Spain, was in Portugal when the local government announced strict lockdown(封锁)measures and the country was closed to the rest of the world. He grabbed the 200 euros he had saved, loaded his sailboat with 160 cans of food and a bottle of whiskey, and set sail.He made the journey because he was sure the lockdown measures were going to be in place for a long time and he wanted to be with his family soon.
He recalled being stopped by authorities and not allowed to enter Cape Verde in Africa to load up more food and fuel in case he needed to complete part of his journey with the boat's motor. He nearly got into a gunfight at night when a ship with bright lights seemed to be following him so he had to go as fast as possible.Besides,Ballestero almost lost the mast(桅杆)of the boat when the wave brushed him from above. The boat went over and a cable broke.Luckily,he got his boat fixed in Brazil.

12.We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience,by testing and providing an idea,or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive.Conditioned as we are to passive learning,it's not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor(谣言).
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn't show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it,word for word,to another person. That person,in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on,through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it.Then the two written statements are compared.Typically, the original message has changed.
That's what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it,stamping(打上标记)it with their own personal style.Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors:A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another, and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
(1)According to the passage,in which of the following situations may passive learning occur?
A.Doing a medical experiment.
B.Solving a math problem.
C.Doing scientific reasoning.
D.Visiting an exhibition.
(2)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Passive learning.
B.Knowledge.
C.Communication.
D.Active learning.
(3)What does the author intend to show by mentioning the game Rumor?
A.A message may be changed when being passed on.
B.A message should be delivered in different ways.
C.People may have problems with their sense of hearing.
D.People tend not to believe in what they know as rumor.
(4)What can we infer from the passage?
A.Active learning is less important.
B.Passive learning is not found among scholars.
C.Active learning occurs more frequently.
D.Passive learning may not be reliable.组卷:2引用:1难度:0.5 -
13.Tomatoes are common in daily life.Cathie Martin,British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years.Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).
Antioxidants, also known as AOS,are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage.Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them.Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO.Martin added two genes(基因)from a plant called snapdragon.Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS.Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes.Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes.Though that's good news, experiments on mice don't always predict what effects on humans will be like.We need to see more experiments about it.
GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s.But GMO products weren't popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren't natural or safe. There're still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.
Even so,many people have concerns about them.Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers.
Anyway,on September 7,2022,the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health.
(1)What makes purple tomatoes really special?
A.Their medical value.
B.Their delicious flavor.

(2)What's the author's attitude to the test on the mice?
