12."I have cancer." Mom said and held me in a tight hug.I could feel her chest shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years,my mom had been supportive.Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me.Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn't stay down for long. After the shock of breast-cancer,she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. "The not-knowing is the worst." she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo(化疗)was the harder part.I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She rarely complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one.She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. "Cancer can take my hair,my nails,my health,my very life. But it can't take my smile." Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me,and it formed an even deeper bond between us.Yet I am certain there were fears she didn't share because she was still protecting me-worries she only shared with Dad.Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer.Mom always said,"When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it,you take away some of its power."

14.Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell.Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads."
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain.According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review,"more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical(逻辑的) part of the brain and acts on the systems related to feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the plan of the best dieter."
Smell has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 different smells. Our ability to smell and taste this large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes(基因),which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome(基因组).Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their amazing research on the nature of this special sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory(嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.
According如o one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads,The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore eager to satisfy their needs.
However, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon(薄荷和桂皮) were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers' impatience.Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to help to get clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes control smell differs from person to person.A study by researchers in Israel has recognized at least 50 olfactory genes which are turned on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate jye.aim.The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors(感受器).
(1)What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A.The type of food smells.
B.The logical part of human brain.
C.The nature of human olfactory system.
D.The relationship between food and feelings.
(2)Which of the following can help people concentrate?
A.Bread.
B.Fruits.

D.There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
(4)What is the passage mainly about?

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow.Bobby didn't wear boots;or rather,he didn't own any.The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already.Try as he might,he could not come up with an idea for his mother's Christmas gift.He shook his head as he thought,"This is useless.Even if I do come up with an idea,I don't have any money for a gift."
Wiping tears from his eyes,Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were.It wasn't easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光)of the setting surfs rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly-found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him,Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother's Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his ten-cent offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby's shoulder, saying,"You just wait here and I'll see what I can do for you."
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop,Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按照如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally the shop owner appeared and asked Bobby to come to the counter.__________
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands,Bobby became so grateful and excited.组卷:2引用:2难度:0.3
