25.While you are sleeping at night, teenagers in the Netherlands( 荷兰)might be having a hard time.Parents there sometimes take their children out at night. They drop them off (让……下车)in the forest and tell them to find their way back home with just their mobile phones.
It's a special Dutch tradition called "dropping".It usually takes kids a few hours to find their way home. The goal is to build their independence (独立性).
Does this sound like a terrible idea?Parents in the Netherlands have reasons for doing this. They believe children should learn to work out problems on their own.In the forest, their children need to use GPS to get the way. They need to deal with tiredness and hunger. They also need to know how to get help if they are lost. They believe when they let children out,all the good things happen-the self-confidence(自信),happiness,and self-sufficiency (自我满足).
Although the Dutch enjoy this tradition, other people think it's a bad idea. They worry about their children's safety most. "It's late and long and kids might be scared." said one parent from the US.After all,why should they put their children in danger when there are many other ways to help them grow up?
Stijn Jongewaard,an 11-year old boy, loves "dropping".When he finished his first "dropping",he told The New York Times that in the future he would like his children to do it as well. "It reminds you, even in very hard times,to keep walking,to keep going.I have never had to do that before."
