1." I Went Skydiving at 84!"
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s,I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of a woman to do that.I got a taste of that dream in 2011,when my husband arranged for me me ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull.Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have,I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay,I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr.did it at age 80.
Why not me?I was just 84 and in pretty good health.A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009,they announced that I was one of the winners.I just couldn't believe it.Inspired by this,I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.
One June 11,2009,nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor,Jay,guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in,but I wasn't frightened-I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet,Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air,the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, "What have I gotten myself into?" But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞),then we just floated downward for about five minutes.Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt-much better than the hot air balloon.I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life.I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don't stop living just because you are 84 years old.If there' s something you want to experience, look into it.If it' s something that is possible, make it happen.

He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Scaport museum. He handed the girl to her father,David Anderson, who had dived in after him.
"I didn't think at all,"Duret told the Daily News."It happened very fast.I reacted very fast."
Duret,an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(码头) when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. In an instant,he took off his coat and jumped into the water.
When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless,he said.Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes.

3.For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war,but years go by without any clear winner.Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries:Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it.From the parents' point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents' complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article,I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things.Examples include the color of the teen's hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school,or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.Second,blaming.The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.Third, needing to be right. It doesn't matter what the topic is-politics,the laws of physics,or the proper way to break an egg-the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority-someone who actually knows something-and therefore to command respect.Unfortunately,as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
(1)Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?
A.Both can continue for generations.
B.Both are about where to draw the line.
C.Neither has any clear winner.
D.Neither can be put to an end.
(2)What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
B.The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
C.The teens accuse their parents of misleading them.
D.The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
(3)Parents and teens want to be right because they want to
A.give orders to the other
B.know more than the other
C.gain respect from the other
D.get the other to behave properly
(4)What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A.Causes for the parent-teen conflicts.
B.Examples of the parent-teen war.
C.Solutions for the parent-teen problems.
D.Future of the parent-teen relationship.组卷:2引用:1难度:0.5
