19．Jose's father died when he was 9 and his mother has barely earned enough to pay the family bills.The dropout rate of the school he attended was high because there were lots of kids from fatherless homes with no money.But Jose was different.He tried to find jobs mowing lawns and delivering newspaper to help his family.He also excelled in math and art at school.He wanted to be a remarkable man.
What Jose expected most was the Boy Scout meeting every Wednesday afternoon.Their scoutmaster，George guided the troop to learn how to give VCR，treat snake bites and identify plants.They climbed at Camp Cherokee and attended the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia.George kept close to the kids.He knew their struggles and wisjye.ais.He often dug into his pocket when one of them needed a little extra money.He led the troop with a gentle hand，encouraged them but let the boys find their own way forward.He always said to the boys， "I have always been here for you." "He was a father figure watching over me，" said Jose.He worshiped George and practiced hard，hoping to win an Eagle Scout badge just like his scoutmaster.
But at the start of his junior year，his family faced a crisis：Maria could not find enough work to keep them from losing their apartment.Besides mowing lawns and delivering newspaper，Jose had to take an afternoon job cleaning offices and one at night making microchips at the manufacturing plant.There was no time left for homework，little for sleep.He missed classes and the weekly Boy Scout meeting.For the first time，his grades slipped.
George sensed the change. "Why are you skipping meetings？" he asked and Jose would only say he had too much work to do.
