  • 2.Connie Monroe clicks a button, flicks her wrist and watches as her neighborhood floods. The shorelines are first to go.Then, the baseball fields at Fleming Park.By the time seawater reaches the senior center,it has flooded streets and over a dozen brick homes.Monroe moves her head up and down, side to side, taking in the simulated (仿真的) view. This is what could happen to Turner Station,a historic African American community southeast of Baltimore,as sea levels rise.
Climate change presents many challenges to coastal communities and to those trying to prepare for its impacts, but one of the most basic is also one of the most vexing:How do you show people and convince them of a possible future?
Communicating the realness and immediacy of the climate threat is hugely important to climate researchers and those aiming to lessen its causes. But it's also the most important to communities faced with coming changes that are already unavoidable. These projects need public support and input. That's why Monroe and other residents(居民)are being directed to sit in metal chairs, put on virtual reality headsets and watch their homes flood.
Turner Station,a community which gets flooded easily,is trying to prepare. It has partnered with the Port of Baltimore,a few nonprofits and a local landscape architecture firm to adopt a range of tools and ways to communicate climate change to the public, because every person is different and every place is different.
The virtual reality program is only the most recent, and perhaps the most effective step.Virtual reality is an immersive experience that can trick the human brain into thinking it's real. But tricking people is not the goal of the sea level rise simulation being used at Turner Station, says Juiano Calil, one of the program's developers. "The goal," he says,"is to start a conversation and help folks visualize the impacts of climate change and the solutions, and also discuss the trade-offs between them."

    (1)Who is Monroe?

    A.A coastal community citizen.
    B.A climate researcher.
    C.An architect.
    D.A VR program developer.
(2)What does the underlined word "vexing" mean in paragraph 2?

    A.Bothersome.
    B.Dramatic.
    C.Original.
    D.Convincing.
(3)Why is VR technology employed here?

A.It can cut down the risks of climate change.
B.It can show severe results of climate change.
C.It can introduce technology to the residents.
D.It can predict the climate change accurately.
(4)What is the purpose of the program?

A.To trick more people to believe.
    B.To win the residents' cooperation.
C.To advocate the application of VR.
D.To inform the residents of the solutions.

  • 3.At some point in our lives, most of us have attended a school or university lecture. These learning sessions give us some insightful and valuable knowledge or can be something we yawn through, trying to keep awake.Whatever our experience, lectures have been and still are the most common teaching method in education. But will they exist in the future?
With the growth of the Internet and so much information at our fingertips, you may think there is no need to gather together at a fixed location holding a handful of textbooks.BBC journalist Matt Pickles says,"Research has shown that students remember as little as 10 percent of their lectures just days afterwards."
Professor Carl Wieman who campaigns against the traditional lecture, felt talking at students and expecting them to absorb knowledge was not that effective so he introduced "active learning" that encourages problem solving in small groups. He listens to them and guides their discussions. The result has improved exam results.Other new alternatives to the lecture have included peer-to-peer learning and project-based learning that enable students to link up and work cooperatively on projects such as building a computer game.
But new learning methods can come at a high financial cost compared to the relatively cheap way of being taught face to face by an academic. The real issue according to Professor Dan Butin, founding dean of the school of education and social policy at Merrimack College in Massachusetts,is that "Academics put thousands of hours of work into their books and much less time into thinking about the effectiveness of their teaching style." But he says,"The lecture has survived because research, not teaching, determines the success of a university and its academics."
So if research quality is a measure of a university's success and money is tight, then the lecture could be here for a little longer.

(1)What may Matt Pickles agree with?

    A.Students have a poor memory.
    B.Students don't work hard enough.
C.Lectures are not so effective as expected.
D.The Internet offers far more information than lectures.
(2)What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.Teaching projects.
    B.Learning strategies.
    C.Alternatives to lectures.
    D.Ways of communication.
(3)Why will lectures still exist in the future according to Professor Dan Butin?

    A.They promote active learning.
B.They call for the least memory work.
C.They determine the success of a university.
    D.They contribute to academic achievements.
(4)How does the author develop the passage?

    A.By analyzing data.
    B.By listing opinions.
    C.By making comparison.
    D.By concluding general rules.

第二节(满分25分)

  • 9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed.
A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example.Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner.Ronny said excitedly,"Some people are fighting!Let's go and have a look!" But Henry refused,"It's none of our business. We'd better go home and don't get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me."
"You are a coward(懦夫),and afraid to go," said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other bays.Henry had to go home alone and didn't think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on,they looked down upon Henry and didn't want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus,he just ignored the other boys' laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However,Ronny didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore.Instead,he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward.Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
A few days later something terrible happened to Ronny.____________
At that moment,Henry happened to pass by.___________
