19. "Look at this," I said to my friend Mandy, holding up the bright-red paper I had grabbed as we entered the library. "There's a five-day art camp at White Cliff this summer."
Mandy took the paper and glanced at it.She stopped when her eyes caught the date. "It's during the last week of July," she said. "That's the same time as the Hill County Fair."
I had a feeling she'd mention that. "Yeah, that's true," I said. "But we always go to the fair."
Mandy handed the paper back to me. "Tessa, you're the artist. But I'm not." She smiled.
"You may not think you can draw, but you can learn," I said in my most encouraging voice.I really didn't want to go alone.
Mandy giggled. "You sound like a TV commercial."
Later,I called my friends Emily and Yoshiko. They would be out of town in July.I sighed, dropping my head down on the red paper.
"What's this?" Mom asked, tugging(拉) at the sheet.
"A leaflet for an art camp, but none of my friends are going."
Knowing I had a hard time jumping into something with no familiar faces around,Mom patted my back and put the paper down. "Maybe next year."
"Maybe." I sighed. "I'm going outside to draw the Westons' pine tree.I'll be out front."
I opened the door and blinked at the bright sunshine as I sat on the front stoop(门阶).I thought about art camp and wished I felt a little braver. But my stomach twirls like a roller coaster when I don't know anyone around me.Besides,I did have fun at the fair with my friends.By the time I started sketching,I had convinced myself I was happy to skip the camp.
I used my pencil and drew the pine's strong trunk, straight and sturdy(结实的).I added the graceful branches, making sure the upper ones lifted gently toward the sun.Once I started sketching,so concentrated was I that I even didn't notice the fly buzzing around me.That's why I jumped when Mr.Weston said, "You've done a great job capturing the strength of that tree on paper."
"Thanks." I smiled,glancing up.Mr.Weston was out for a walk.
"That pine was there when we moved in," Mr.Weston said, "but I have planted pine trees before, when I worked for the park. You have to spread out the roots near the surface so the tree can get enough water and grow tall.If you plant the root ball too deep, the tree withers(枯萎).I learned that roots grow out,not down."
