  • 2.Whenever Aaron Moreno heard the ice cream truck's familiar jingle(铃铛声),he looked to his mom for a smile to know if she had enough money for Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
But for his mom --- who is single and struggling to make ends meet --- it wasn't always easy to buy Aaron his favorite snack. That's what inspired the 8-year-old to start selling plants. The small project quickly changed into a business that helped his family move from a shed into an apartment.
"When I lost both my jobs and we had no choice but to live in a shed, this kid was always asking for Hot Cheetos," Berenice Pacheco,Aaron's mom said. "It's just $3,but when you have kids and you don't have a job,it can make all the difference."
Aaron used Pacheco's last $12 to buy succulents, which he sold to neighbors for a small profit. At the beginning,he celebrated his success with a trip to the ice cream shop --- but he realized a small business could be his family's way out of difficulty, and he started Aaron's Garden. "Our shed was hot and crowded," Aaron said. "I started my garden so my mom won't be stressed because I don't like seeing her struggle."
After Pacheco posted photos of Aaron's growing business on Instagram, friends and family started coming by to show support. One of Pacheco's high school friends started a GoFundMe to support Aaron's Garden and the money raised through Aaron's Garden and GoFundMe didn't just move the family into a new home --- it reunited them.
In 2018,Pacheco sent her daughter Ayleen to live with her family in Mexico due to their financial struggles. "The best part of what Aaron has done for us is bringing back his sister," Pacheco said. "It's such a blessing."

  • 3.The dog was depressed when her companion,a dog called Charlie, died suddenly from a viral infection last August. The little dog's head hung low and her droopy ears flopped on either side of her sorrowful eyes. "It seemed obvious to me that she was grieving," says her owner Margaret,a 51-year-old manager from Ashford,Kent.
But until recently, the idea that a dog would be heartbroken by the loss of a "loved one" would have been regarded as,at best, sentimental and,at worst, stupid.Experts agreed that it was unscientific to suggest animals experienced the same sort of complex emotions as humans. They had only basic or primal feelings, such as fear or anger.
Marian Dawkins, professor of animal behaviour at the University of Oxford, asked,"It's quite obvious that animals undergo behavioural changes after losing a social companion, offspring or parent, but are these accompanied by conscious(有意识的) experiences of suffering?"
Now,though, with increasingly advanced scans showing that humans form emotions in the parts of the brain we share with all animals, experts are arguing that animal emotions must be similar to our own.Meanwhile, more and more behavioural studies seem to be backing it up.
Dr.Karen Overall,a Pennsylvania animal behaviourist, believes that while we still know little about the depth and exact nature of animal sadness, there are "so many daily examples" of animals appearing deeply affected by the death of a companion.Mare Bekoff, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, has witnessed several incidents of what he is certain was animal sadness, including sea-lion mothers wailing pitifully as they watch their babies being eaten by killer whales, and Kenyan elephants that "seemed lost",wandering around with their tails and trunks hanging limp, after their mother had died.

(1)What does the underlined word "grieving" in Paragraph 1 refer to?

    A.Feeling nervous.
    B.Feeling peaceful.
    C.Feeling sad.
    D.Feeling bored.
(2)What can be inferred from Marian Dawkins's opinion?

A.She is certain that Charlie's death was an accident.
B.She is sure animals have similar feelings like humans.
C.She disagrees animals have changes after losing a companion.
D.She is cautious about whether animals have complex emotions.
(3)Why are Marc Bekoff's experiences mentioned in the last paragraph?

A.To support the assumption of animal sadness.
B.To suggest the necessity of protecting animals.
C.To stress the importance to study animal emotions.
D.To show the deep love between mothers and children.
(4)What is the main idea of the text?

A.dog felt upset at the death of its companion.
B.Animals may experience sadness like humans.
C.Pet owners are advised to treat their pets well.
D.Scientists found the secret of animal behaviour.

  • 9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a foggy morning in July,Clay and Amy arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga on the Caribbean island of St.Kitts, ready for their first climb as husband and wife.Clay, aged 23,and Amy,aged 25,had married just five days earlier back home in Indiana.
Like any good couple, they had their complementary(互补的)differences.Amy had always been the worrier. She liked order and structure.Clay,on the other hand, was optimistic, carefree and easygoing and he was always certain that things would turn out just fine.
So it was Clay who wanted to take a day of their Caribbean honeymoon and spend it climbing Mount Liamuiga. The couple, dressed in T-shirts and sneakers, arrived for their journey in a rental car. However, upon arrival, they only found an empty and dirty parking lot. They made their way up anyway through the narrow path.
It took them nearly three hours to reach the top,but the view made it all worthwhile. The island of St.Kitts stretched before them, the green rain forest carpet rolling down towards the water. They may have been tired and sweaty --- Clay's T-shirt was soaked --- but they couldn't have been happier as they ate their sandwiches, took a few photos, and walked around the rim(边缘) of the volcano completely alone.
That's when Clay saw it:a small path that led down to the volcano's crater(火山口).For Clay,it was unbearably attractive. It felt like a secret entrance to a paradise(天堂).Amy was less enthusiastic. The path was steep and she was afraid of heights, but she followed Clay's lead. After just a few minutes, though, she'd had enough. She told her husband she'd wait on the rocks just off the path while he went exploring. "Just be quick," she said as she watched him set off on the dangerous path.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
