20．I'm a native speaker of American English，but as a linguist （语言学家） and someone who has lived around the world for half the life，I've heard a lot of non-native speakers' opinions about my language.
In Ecuador a woman insisted that "rocket" and "racket" sounded exactly the same，even when I pronounced them both very slowly.In Austria，more than one German speaker told me English verbs have too many tenses.For example， "I go to college" vs. "I'm going to college" vs. "I will go to college" vs. "I will be going to college，" and so on.Of course，we native speakers easily recognize the small differences between these moods and tenses，which may also change with different situations.
Swedish speakers don't understand why in English we don't have two distinct words for "grandmother".They have one for maternal （母系的） grandmother and another for paternal （父系的） grandmother.Similarly，I never understand why Italians use the same word "nipote" for both grandson and nephew.However，one thing anyone who has learned a foreign language understands is that every grammar has its own logic （逻辑性）.Native speakers don't even think about it.Having learned to understand the logic of different languages such as Chinese，German，Spanish，Italian，and Swedish，I've finally learned to understand the logic of the rules of my native English.
I find most foreign speakers do better with English than fellow Americans do with other languages.One of the greatest writers in the English language was a Russian— Vladimir Nabokov.He wasn't a native speaker，yet he wrote in English better than I ever could.So don't get too upset — if you keep at it，you might end up competing for the Booker Prize or the National Book Award!
