4.On July 20,1969,Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon.
The spacesuit Armstrong wore on his lunar journey has become a symbol of courage and human achievement. In 1971,the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum(NASM),in Washington,D.C. ,got Armstrong's sujye.ai.It stood proudly on show for visitors ,until there were changes in the suit's appearance. "Over time, the suit started to show signs of deterioration, " Lisa Young said.Young works at NASM and her job is to preserve(维护)historical and cultural objects.
"Plastics are difficult to preserve, "Young said. They usually degrade(降解)over time.Neoprene is one type of plastics in Armstrong's sujye.ai.It can turn hard but it's easy to break into tiny pieces. This would badly damage the spacesuit.Looking for new ways to preserve this historical treasure,NASM took it away from show in 2006.
What causes plastics to degrade in the first place? "Many things, " Odile Madden,a scientist in California said. She explained that sunlight, water, wetness, and dust could cause plastics to degrade. "Some plastics will break down no matter what we do, " Madden said.
Yet history can still be saved.Scientists have found that storing plastics in cooler temperatures, with lower wetness levels, can slow down degradation.According to Young,Armstrong's suit is now in storage at a temperature of 17.2°C and a lower relative wetness of 30%.These conditions will be kept when Armstrong's suit returns to a museum show for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
Plastic degradation has an effect on the art, too. Now Armstrong's suit doesn't appear as beautiful as it was before. The same case also happened on plastic food.Artist Claes Oldenburg created False Food Selection in 1966.It contains plastic food showed in a wooden box.The plastic food used to look real. Now,some of it has become flat and yellow.Georgina Rayner, another scientist at Harvard Art Museums, explained, "The artwork's wooden box produces an acidic(酸的)gas that destroys plastics. This makes the degradation faster. " But Rayner and her partners said, "Plastics are a part of our history. It's important to preserve them so that our future generations can understand the journey we've taken. "
(1)The word "deterioration" in Paragraph 1 probably means "
A.getting worse
B.getting smaller
C.becoming useless
D.becoming dangerous
(2)Why did NASM stop putting Armstrong's spacesuit on show in 2006?
A.To do some surveys on its plastics.
B.To change it with new appearance.
C.To look for a better museum for it.
D.To find solutions to its plastic problem.
(3)How can they make the degradation of Armstrong's spacesuit slower?
A.By putting it on show in a certain museum.
B.By storing it with right temperature and wetness.
C.By controlling water, fire, dust and sunlight around it.
D.By keeping it until the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Acidic gas is important for the preservation of plastic artworks.
B.Breaking down plastics makes the artworks less important.
C.Plastic artworks help future generations learn more about history.
D.People are advised to live a green life without plastics.组卷:7引用:2难度:0.4
