Getting to the base camp had been an expedition in jye.aiself.It was getting dark as we arrived. After a very welcome night's sleep we were up early for a couple of days training on how to fill in the datasheets, identify tracks and prints and what to do with useful animal droppings amongst other things.
The next day four of us set off up one of the mountains to do our first surveying with our guide Oleg.We spent most of the morning climbing the endlessly steep mountain with little communication from Oleg who only became active when we stopped to take on water.By early afternoon we reached what appeared to be the top but was another ridge (山脊).My 47-year-old bones were shaking and I was struggling to breathe. We hadn't seen a thing except for rocky mountains. Our guide was keeping going but we had very little idea about what we were supposed to be doing Energy was dropping rapidly.
Then everything changed. The radio came to life.Hardly able to speak through excitement, one of the other groups told us that they had just discovered fresh snow leopard tracks!
On arrival,we found the other group silently looking at a gulf (溪谷).A set of very clear paw prints ran from top to bottom.I was filled with a feeling of complete exhilaration. One of the rarest big cats in the world had passed through where I was standing! They were here and what we were going to do would help them survive.

  • 13.Patagonia,a leading brand in outdoor clothing,is climbing a mountain in the clothing industry and reaching a new summit.Through several measures, the company inspires people to share, resell, repair, and recycle their clothes, producing less waste.Every second, about one garbage truck of used clothes is sent to the landfill (垃圾埋区) or is burned.Patagonia is taking this alarming statistic seriously. They are including a "buy used" choice on their website, offering second-hand clothes alongside their newest designs.
The second-hand trend is here to stay.Other chains such as The North Face.Macy's.Adidas.Burberry,and Made have also accepted the new circular economy business model.Famous traditional retailers (零售商) are also becoming used clothing providers, and are changing the way second-hand clothes are sold.
Even the most skeptical (怀疑) shoppers are now open to the idea of buying used quality items. As a result,it is no surprise that the total second-hand market is expected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029.Naturally,the most sustainable (可持续的) piece of clothing is the one that already exists. This "green" article of clothing doesn't require using original resources. Moreover,it prevents used clothes from ending up in landfills, and it requires no plastic packaging.
According to a 2018 report by ThredUP,buying a piece of used clothing expands its life on average by 2.2 years, which reduces its carbon, waste, and water footprint by 73 percent. So even though the development of new materials and processes in fashion seems promising (有前景的),wearing second-hand clothes is the easiest and most immediate way to face the environmental challenges the fashion industry brings.

(1)What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 2 ?

A.Lots of second-hand clothes are of high quality.
B.The second-hand trend is more commonly accepted.
C.Traditional retailers have a role to play in reducing waste.
D.Shopping attitudes towards second-hand clothes are changing.
(2)What's the author's attitude to the future of second-hand market?

    A.Skeptical.
    B.Unclear.
    C.Passive.
    D.Optimistic.
(3)What is the biggest advantage of buying used clothing?

    A.Keeping pace with fashion.
    B.Satisfying shoppers' needs.
    C.Protecting the environment.
    D.Lowering economic stress.
(4)What's the best title for the text?

A.Patagonia Is a Leading Clothing Brand.
    B.Clothing Waste Influences the Environment.
    C.Second—hand Clothes Are Facing Challenges.
D.Patagonia Is Now Selling Used Clothes.

  • 14.There is certainly evidence that actors experience a blending of their real self with their assumed characters. For instance,Benedict Cumberbatch said, "My mum says I'm much more impatient with her when I'm filming Sherlock."
Mark Seton,a researcher at the University of Sydney, has even coined the term "post-dramatic stress disorder" to describe the lasting effects experienced by actors who lose themselves in a role. "Actors may often prolong habits of the characters they have embodied," he writes.
A recent finding doesn't involve acting, and it indicates that merely spending some time thinking about another person seemed to rub off on the volunteers sense of self led by Meghan Meyer at Princeton University.Across several studies, these researchers asked volunteers to first rate their own personalities, memories or physical attributes, and then to perform the same task from the perspective of another person. For instance, they might score the emotionality of various personal memories, and then rate how a friend or relative would have experienced those same events.
After taking the perspective of another, the volunteers scored themselves once again:the consistent finding was that their self-knowledge was now changed-their self-scores had shifted to become more similar to those they'd given for someone else. For instance,if they had initially said the trait term "confident" was only moderately related to themselves and then rated the term as being strongly related to a friend's personality, when they came to rescore themselves, they now tended to see themselves as more confident.Remarkably, this morphing of the self with another was still apparent even if a 24-hour gap was left between taking someone else's perspective and re-rating oneself.
"By simply thinking about another person,we may adapt our self to take the shape of that person," said Meyer and her colleagues. That our sense of self should have this quality might be a little discouraging, especially for anyone who has struggled to establish a firm sense of identity.Yet there is an optimistic message here, too. The challenge of improving ourselves一or at least seeing ourselves in a more positive light-might be a little easier than we thought.By roleplaying or acting out the kind of person we would like to become,or merely by thinking about and spending time with people who embody the kind of attributes we would like to see in ourselves,we can find that our sense of self changes in desirable ways.
"As each of us chooses who to befriend, who to model, and who to ignore," write Meyer and her colleagues, "we must make these decisions aware of how they shape not only the fabric of our social networks, but even our sense of who we are."

    (1)The first two paragraphs mainly

    A.state that acting requires skills
B.explain the stress that an actor faces
C.show that a role leaves a mark on the actor
D.stress the importance of devoting oneself to a role
(2)What does the underlined phrase "rub off on" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Influence.
    B.Strengthen.
    C.Confuse.
    D.Determine.
(3)According to the study, taking the perspective of another person

    A.brings changes to one's self-knowledge
B.motivates one to better understand himself
C.helps people deal with their identity problems
D.produces temporary effects on one's character
(4)What is the significance of the study?

A.It offers instructions on making friends.
B.It proposes a means to improve ourselves.
C.It gives advice on adjusting one's emotions.
D.It presents a way to deal with stress disorder.
