  • 2.I enjoy throwing stuff away.I'd love to go full minimalism (极简主义),but my wife and two teenage kids do not share my dream of a house with almost nothing in it.I have tried. When the kids were little,I taught them my two favorite games- "Do We Need It?" and "Put It in Its Place"– and made them play every few months.Their enthusiasm never matched mine.
If I'm going to be honest,my own tidying skills are not as great as I'd like.My "discarded" pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful.I consider this unhealthy.I want to be better at moving on.
So,this time I found help - the classics for people like me:The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,by Marie Kondo.Kondo's commitment to her craft is astonishing. Her philosophy is only to keep things you love. Can I go full Kondo?I will try.One central idea is to clean by category. You start by collecting all clothes and gathering them together for consideration. It makes you rethink how you organize.Next, hold each item and ask if it brings you joy. This way you're choosing what to keep. And that's how I find myself with all my clothes on my bedroom floor. My wife walks by and gives me a look that says I'm nuts. She's probably not wrong.
Somewhere near the bottom of this chaos is my special jacket.I move through the pile:pants, shirts, suits and shoes. Then my last category:jackets.I haven't worn the thing in about 30 years.Somehow,it has survived. Now that I'm striving to follow Kondo-surely,its time has come?
I hold it in my hand. There is a tear just below the collar that widens as I hold jye.ai.It's literally falling apart. Will I ever wear it again? Not a chance.Does it feel good to wear?Does it bring me joy?Actually, yes. At this moment,my daughter walks in.She asks about the jacket.I tell her the story. She thinks I should keep jye.ai.It's cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia (怀念) is the very reason.
I'm not entirely convinced by my daughter's arguments.I believe in looking ahead, not backward.Nevertheless, sometimes it's hard to let go.So I gently place the jacket on the "keep" pile.

  • 3.Re-entering the workforce after a long absence is often a difficult path. The longer you're out,the harder it can be to get back in.For years, companies like Goldman Sachs have offered return-to-work programs as a way to help workers go back into the workforce after a long break.Returnships,as they are often called, offer training and networking opportunities to workers-usually mothers-who've been out of the workforce for an extended period of time.More recently, there's been growing interest from companies in starting this type of program.
Goldman Sachs' returnship program requires applicants to have been out of the workforce for two years or more. "We knew the interview process would need to look different," said Kelley Berlin,Grubhub's chief human resources officer. "We couldn't view them based on their current technology skills. We had to look at their performance level and potential."
The first week of Goldman Sachs' 12-week program focuses on training, followed by an apprenticeship (学徒期) in one of the bank's divisions. The participants are paired with a manager,a coach and previous returnees. On average, the company gets about 1,000 applications yearly for its program and accepts 25 to 30.Roughly 75% of those who go through the program get extended offers elsewhere to become full-time employees.Participants are paid ﹩40 an hour during the returnship and the salaries of the full-time positions offered after the program are ﹩100,000 or above.
The audio storytelling company Audible started its returnship program during the pandemic(疫情). "We felt that starting during the pandemic would be best because we would be able to support many jobless caregivers and their families caused by the pandemic," said Anne Emi,Audible's Chief People Officer. "Knowing that it was very hard for professionals taking caregiving career breaks to re-enter the workforce,we knew it would be much more difficult during the pandemic. But we were so impressed with what our program brought to the table. In a year or two,we will be growing the class by three times and bringing in 100 apprentices to join the business."

    (1)Why are return-to-work programs organized?

A.To offer workers chances to re-enter the workforce.
B.To help companies find more qualified workers.
C.To provide workers with further training opportunities.
D.To plan out proper timetables for stay-at-home mothers.
(2)What can we know about Goldman Sachs' program?

A.It is easy to be accepted by the program.
B.Trainees need to work in the bank for 12 weeks.
C.Few trainees will get employed after the program.
D.Trainees will be well paid after taking full-time positions.
(3)What may Anne Emi probably think of Audible's returnship program?

    A.Interesting.
    B.Problematic.
    C.Successful.
    D.Risky.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A.Companies Seriously Affected by the Pandemic.
B.Returmships Send Mothers back to Work.
C.Workers Get Better Jobs after Training.
    D.More Job Opportunities Appearing.

  • 9.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Thin, average, and undisciplined,I was the underdog of the boys' basketball tryouts (选拔赛) in seventh grade.Making the team was very important to me.Although I was extremely nervous,I truly thought I would make the team. But I went in overly optimistic, and quickly faced a cruel reality check.
When on the court,I huffed and puffed like an old man on his last legs;clearly,I was out of shape and having trouble keeping up.When it hit me that this was only the first day,and that there was a second to follow,I realized I would have to step it up in order to gain a spot on the team.
Unfortunately, day two went exactly like day one:I missed shots, passed badly like an out-of-breath fool.Hoping the coach was not watching all my bad moves,I had trouble keeping a positive attitude.Finally,Coach-who at five-foot-four usually seemed small, posted the lists of the Boys A and B Teams.Everybody quickly ran to catch a glimpse of the chosen few.
After scanning the list once, twice, three times,my name was nowhere.Although I had predicted the disaster that had now settled on me,with my head hanging.I slowly walked to the car. This experience definitely had not gone as I planned.
On the way home,I complained "How could that foolish boy is a better choice than me?And…"
"Adam!" my mom cut me off. "Why don't you realize maybe you need a little more practice? You'd better go to basketball camps next summer."
Although I did not want to believe her,I knew it was true.Failing to make the team was nobody's fault but mine.Right then and there,in the middle of my anger,I realized I had to get my act together.
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    Paragraph 1:
Then I threw myself into as many basketball opportunities as I could find.
    ______
    Paragraph 2:
