三、阅读理解

  • 7.Certain household items are constant reminders that nothing lasts forever.Examples include towels, ink cartridges (墨盒) that end up costing more than the printer itself and,of course, pens.
But,that belief may have to change thanks to Italian design firm Pininfarina, the creator of some of the world's most famous car designs for companies like Ferrari and Fiat, which launches a writing tool that supposedly never has to be replaced. On the surface,it looks to be a common item. One of the firm's previous models, the Limited Edition Visconti, sells for 1,895.However,for a much more reasonable price point of about 120,buyers can purchase a different hand-crafted writing instrument with an elegant look. The Napkin 4.EVER Pininfarina Cambiano's biggest selling point, obviously,is an innovative writing tip that allows users to write "indefinitely (无限期地)".
The notion of "indefinitely" in this case simply means that since the pen technically doesn't use ink, there aren't any cartridges to refill.Instead, the special material Pininfarina uses is something called ethergraf,a patented metallic alloy (合金) developed by Italian household manufacturer Chic Trading. The company, which worked with Pininfarina on the project, already shows the technology in its original Napkin 4.EVER line of pens.
"The process involved is based on the principle of oxidization (氧化)," explains Davide Fabi, head of special projects at the Napkin division. "The writing tip oxidizes the paper,a trait resembling that of a pencil."
You can think of oxidization as the same process that turns newspapers yellow over time.Contact between the pen and paper changes the writing surface, but not the tool.In that sense, the claim that the pen can be used to draw infinite lines is somewhat similar,at least in principle,to how a touchscreen stylus (触笔) works. And though the tip does wear out over time,Fabi assures that the effect is so minimum and gradual that users won't even notice.

(1)What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A.To create an interesting atmosphere.
B.To draw out the subject of the passage.
C.To illustrate that nothing lasts forever.
D.To introduce one of the key characters.
(2)What is the key feature of the pen?

    A.It is hand-crafted.
    B.It isn't expensive.
    C.It can write forever.
    D.It has a good look.
(3)What happens when the pen writes on paper?

    A.Paper changes colors at random.
B.Its tip reacts with paper and a trait is left.
C.Oxidization causes the pen to produce ink.
D.Some ink is left on paper through the pen.
(4)What is the best title of the passage?

A.A Pen that Needs No Cartridges
    B.Pininfarina's Newest Product
    C.Application of Oxidization in Pens
D.An Inkless Pen that Lets You Write Forever

  • 8.Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner, and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table.Instead of going to the dish cabinet, she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old, mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.
When she had set all six places, she stood back and sighed, "Oh,Grandma, your plates are so beautiful.Ours are all alike!" We had a good laugh at her innocent remark, but as I think back to all those years ago,I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.
Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the litlle things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels,a service in the 1970s.They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This is really not very much food.Every evening Mom would make to-go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil, and then deliver then to the people who she knew didn't get enough to eat.
This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven.Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad,Mom's clients dined on Beef Manhattans,pan-fried chicken or meatloaf, along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake.Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job,and Mom continued after Dad's death until all her former clients had either passed away or moved out.
When I was cleaning out Mom's house after her death,I kept one as a souvenir(纪念品).That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for one's neighbor that were modeled for me by my parents.

(1)Why did the author think those plates beautiful?

    A.They were not all alike.
    B.They were little Jessica's pride.
C.They were collected from different places.
D.They were symbols of the parents' kindness.
(2)What did the author's mother do to earn a living in the 1970s?

    A.Be a housewife.
    B.Run Meals on Wheels.
    C.Deliver food to houses.
    D.Do housework for the old.
(3)Why did the author's mother make to-go meals?

    A.It was her job.
    B.She was good at cooking.
C.She wanted to help beyond her duty.
D.Her family didn't have enough to eat.
(4)What is the best title for the text?

    A.Plates of Sympathy
    B.A Precious Souvenir
    C.Services for the Senior
    D.A Kind-hearted Mother
