  • 11.It was New Year time, but I wasn't looking forward to it.That winter,my mother and my stepfather moved our family to Southern California. My brother and I were leaving our rural Alabama behind. This would be our first New Year away from Alabama. My mother took to California like a swan to a royal lake.My athletic little brother,Paul, was thrilled at a climate that allowed him to go to the beach whenever he wanted.
I,however, was a fat child with heavy southern pronunciation. My first day in the new class,I introduced myself in a low voice. The instant I opened my mouth to speak, the whole class burst into laughter, "He talks funny." It was so frustrating that I went to place a call to Granny Smith after school, who was my biggest support. But I didn't get through.
On Sunday evening, the phone rang.It was Granny. She often took advantage of the discounted long-distance rates (长途电话费) on Sundays. She said she'd shipped a New Year package.Sure enough,it arrived.Surprised at the box, large enough to hold a small refrigerator,we eagerly tore it open. The smell of Granny's house filled the room:a combination of fried meat, sausages, furniture polish and decorations. Her house was tiny and always filled with cheap holiday decorations and homemade food before New Year. But in my childhood eyes,it was precious and fantastic.
There were countless tins and containers. We open them to discover piles of holiday treats. She even included our traditional candy bats. The box was as bottomless as a magical box. There, beneath all these, was familiar holiday.
Every New Year that we spent in California, the postal service would call and say our package arrived.Over the years, many treasures arrived in the box.For me,it's always been the best part of the holiday.

(1)How did the author's brother feel when they were moving to California?

    A.Distant.
    B.Appreciative.
    C.Joyful.
    D.Anxious.

    A.He had a strong accent.
    B.He had a humorous tone.
    C.He looked overweight.
    D.He lowered his voice.
(3)Which of the following best describe Granny

    A.conventional and determined.
    B.lonely and grateful.
    C.committed and confident.
    D.economical and caring.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

    A.Granny's Care Package
    B.An Unforgettable Holiday
    C.Our Move to California
    D.A Telephone Call from Granny

  • 12.It's a cliché (陈词滥调) that everyone's too busy these days. But one specific complaint is made especially mournfully:There's never any time to read.
What makes the problem thorny is that the usual time-management techniques don't seem sufficient. The web's full of articles offering tips on making time to read: "Give up TV" or "Carry a book with you at all times."
But in my experience, using such methods to free up the odd 30 minutes doesn't work.Sit down to read and work-related thoughts keep spinning(旋 转)— or else you're so exhausted that a challenging book's the last thing you need. The modern mind,Tim Parks,a novelist and critic, writes, "is showing more tendency toward communication...It is not simply that one is interrupted;it is that one is actually ready for interruption." Deep reading requires not just time, but a special kind of time which can't be obtained merely by becoming more efficient.
In fact, "becoming more efficient" is part of the problem.Thinking of time as a resource to be maximised means you approach it for your specific purpose, judging any given moment should be well spent which advances toward some goal.Deep reading,by contrast, depends on being willing to risk inefficiency, goallessness, even time-wasting.Try to arrange it in as a to-do list item and you'll manage only goal-focused reading — useful, sometimes, but not the most fulfilling kind. "The future comes at us like empty bottles along an unstoppable and nearly endless conveyor belt (传送带)," writes Gary Eberle in his book Sacred Time, and "we feel a pressure to fill these different-sized bottles (days, hours, minutes) as they pass, for if they get by without being filled,we will have wasted them." No mindset could be worse for losing yourself in a book.
So what does work?Perhaps surprisingly, scheduling regular times for reading. You'd think this might fuel the efficiency mindset, but in fact,Eberle notes, such habitual behaviour helps us "step outside time's flow" into "soul time." You could limit distractions by reading only physical books,or on single-purpose e-readers. "Carry a book with you at all times" can actually work, too – providing you dip in often enough,so that reading becomes the common state from which you can temporarily get away to take care of business, before getting dipped again. On a really good day,it no longer feels as if you're "making time to read," but just reading, and making time for everything else.

(1)Which can best replace the underlined word "thorny" in Paragraph 2?

    A.tough
    B.pleasant
    C.slight
    D.essential
(2)Why do the usual time-management techniques fail to work?

A.The modern mind is not shaped.
B.Repetition is required in deep reading.
C.People always forget to carry a book with them.
D.Deep reading is not fully guaranteed.
(3)What does the "fill the empty bottles" metaphor in Paragraph 3 imply?

    A.To update their to-do lists.
    B.To fulfill their passing time.
C.To carry out their big plans.
    D.To pursue carefree reading.
(4)Which statement may Eberle agree with?

A.People should devote themselves to reading for fear of wasting time.
B.Scheduling regular times for reading is helpful in achieving deep reading.
C.Deep reading can only be achieved after dealing with all the daily businesses.
D.Distractions can be avoided by developing online reading habits.

  • 13.Somebody gave me an award! In my entire life,I have only ever received one award:in 2000,I was named Most Helpful by my university drama society.
This time, however,I won an actual award!Admittedly, there was no big awards ceremony.jye.ai an email and a social media post. But,nevertheless,it's given me a glow of pride.Somebody acknowledged my achievements!
The problem is that society seems to favor youth. There are a million '30 under 30' lists which I was never on,and yet it was only last year that the magazine Forbes launched its '50 over 50' list. But while I don't want to take those awards away from the kids,1 know if someone had declared me an 'up-and-coming' anything at 30,I'd have been as terrified as I was delighted;so much to live up to.Now,however,I am grabbing that award and shouting: "At last, the recognition I deserve!",because I know how much work I've put in,and I'm not about to let anyone lessen that.
If I was to list the advantages of getting older, then the ability to recognize my accomplishments and to be proud of them would be at the very top.Heard too many times,it's boring to say that we women put ourselves down, but too often we push away praise, rather than taking it up like the cat who got the cream. For most of us,praise is not a daily gift. So,when it comes,we need to allow ourselves to receive it.And if no one else is giving it to us,we need to give it to ourselves.
It works the other way, too. My new favourite hobby is writing emails to the head offices of restaurants and shops,to tell them how lovely their staff are.It makes me feel good, and I hope it does them, too.
A friend once told me about a self-development course she'd been on where participants had to shout 'I apprise of my decision!',and then high-five themselves.I put this ritual into my daily life. Now,I am done. And,then,I'm writing myself an email of praise.Because, like that award,I deserve it.

(1)What made the author feel proud of getting the award this time?

    A.The big awards ceremony.
    B.The social media post.
C.The second award after her graduation.
    D.The recognition of her achievements.
(2)What does the author want to tell in paragraph 3?

    A.Society presents unfairness to youth.
B.Her years-long effort pays off eventually.
C.She is confident enough to be superior to kids.
D.She is too scared to live up to others' expectations.
(3)What does the underlined "ritual" in paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.Practice.
    B.Course.
    C.Hobby.
    D.Need.
(4)What advice would the author like to give women?

A.Being content with their own life.
    B.Being appreciative of themselves.
C.Being generous to their lovely staff.
    D.Being modest about their achievements.

The typical cellphone user touches his or her phone 2,617 times every day. Most people spend 3 hours on their phones each day.The effects of this usage are shocking:reducing the quality of conversations and negatively affecting short-term memory and problem solving. (1)
How can you cut down on your usage of cellphones? The following are some methods suggested by experts.
       *Keep to your schedule.
You could set alarms specifying how often you can check your phone.(2)
When your alarm sounds, read and handle notifications (通知) and then put down the phone. To reduce response anxiety, tell your friends or family that you may not respond to their messages as quickly as you used to.
       *Create no-phone time zones.
During working hours,if you're constantly upset by your phone going off,you won't remain focused on the work. Therefore, you could create a no-phone time zone. (3)
So you can concentrate on the work in front of you.
       *(4)

One idea is to replace some smartphone functions with real objects. For example, purchase a radio alarm clock instead of depending on your phone to wake you up,and start your new year by buying a new notebook,so you can write your appointment and to-do list there instead of in your phone.
*Put a hairband (发带) around your phone.
When placed in the middle of the phone, the hairband allows users to answer phone calls easily, but makes other uses of the phone more difficult.Every time you want to use your phone, this brings about a mindfulness exercise and makes you ask yourself what your intention is.If you really want to use the phone, set your intention for why and remove the hairband. (5)
Choose the methods most suitable for your situation and make efforts to avoid too much use of cellphones.

    A.Reduce your reliance.
B.Learn to live a life without phones.
C.People get addicted to smartphones for different reasons.
    D.For example,every half-hour,every 45 minutes or every hour.
E.And the relation between phone addiction and mental illness is alarming.
F.The practice helps avoid mindlessly unlocking your phone every 3 minutes.
G.Shut your phone for at least 2 hours of your day, when you're most productive.
