19．ㅤOn Tom's birthday，everything went on as usual.He was about to leave for school when his parents smiled， "Wait!We have something special for you."Then，they handed Tom a pair of cool basketball shoes.
ㅤTom was so glad."Happy birthday!" his parents said as he tried the shoes on."These are not new.I got them from Mr.Byrne's second-hand shop，but they look pretty new，right？" Tom's mom added. "I don't care where they came from，Mom.

ㅤTom came to school in these shoes.His friends immediately gathered，and considered his shoes cool.Tom gladly let them take turns trying on the shoes.That was when Brandon saw the words on the sole（鞋底）of one of the shoes.
ㅤ"There's something written here，" Brandon said，sitting down and taking off the shoes.Tom took the pair and read the words on the sole， "To my dearest boy."
ㅤ"Your parent probably wrote that，" Brandon stated.Tom shook his head，replying， "This is not my parent's handwrjye.aiing.It must be from the old owner's parent." Tom then wondered who would have given up such pretty shoes. "Maybe these shoes have an unusual story，" he thought.
ㅤWhen school ended，he reached Mr.Byrne's store and asked about the shoes.The old man tried to recall who had brought them over.Then he said， "Oh，these were brought in by Samuel around your age.He lives in a yellow wooden house nearby." "Do you know why he sold them？" Tom asked.
ㅤ"Most people bring things here because they need money，" Mr.Byrne explained.
ㅤSamuel was just one of such people.His dad had died weeks before，and his poor mother was sick and needed money for medicine （药）.So he finally decided to sell his basketball shoes to support his mother though he loved the shoes.
ㅤNot knowing the fact，Tom walked out of the store，thinking about the people who needed to' give up their things for money. "If the boy who owned these shoes had done so，he was probably sad about it，" Tom whispered （低声细语），and decided to learn about what had happened to the boy.
