3.How to Be a Winner Sir Steven Redgrave
Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals
"In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病).Believing my career was over,I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was the encouragement I needed.I could still be a winner if I believed in myself.I am not saying that it isn't difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet.Nothing is to stand in my way."
Karen Pickering
Swimming World Champion
"I swim 4 hours a day,6 days a week.I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success —you can't follow a career in any field without being well-organized.List what you believe you can achieve.Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are,and you'll be a step closer to achieving them."
Kirsten Best
Poet & Writer
"When things are getting hard,a voice inside my head tells me that I can't achieve something. Then there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense,it helps a lot to repeat words such as 'calm','peace' or 'focus',either out loud or silently in my mind.It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychological(心理的)tool."

4.I am connected to many people working as volunteers all over the world, even after COVID-19 broke out.
Twelve days ago,I was contacted by someone I know,a person from Kenya. He shared a story about his work for kindness and joy.In his sharing,I discovered his family and other families had no food since March 23 because of lockdown(禁闭).
For one day I was grief-stricken for them.I mean, how could I,in North Carolina, possibly do anything to help feed a man and 50 people on the other side of the world? After a sleepless night I awoke with clarity to give money to these families. It was not a lot of money, but all that I had and I was determined to find a way to get the funds to Kenya from the US.Luckily,I succeeded in the end.My friend has been able to make the money go far buying corn, oil, fruit, and vegetables to feed 20 adults and 30 children. And now they have food.
Each day presents a new problem. Many more people in other countries in Africa have reached out to me asking for help.It is heartbreaking.I cannot help everyone with money but I am determined to help everyone I can with telling their stories through our column Global Storytellers for Kindness on our website.I asked my friend for a list of the children in his family. So now I sit with a list of 30 names, ages, and school years, wondering what on earth we can do for these children. Each night I sleep with a question and hope my dreams will give me guidance during my awake time.
Each day is filled with problems and difficulties I could never have imagined, and also thoughts, actions, and ideas that are blossoming to extend love and mercy between many humans.

5.For quite some time I have had an interest in the situation of the homeless.I have read about it,prayed over it,and have done small things to help. But feeling that I could, and should do more to make a difference,I concluded that living as a homeless man -- at least for a very brief period -- was the best way to understand what it's like to have no place to call home.
I decided that St.Vincent de Paul Catholic Church would be my first stop.Since the church opens its basement to homeless people every Friday for a hot meal St.Vincent's was symbolically a very good place to start my day as a homeless man.
After praying before the Blessed Sacrament,I hit the subfreezing streets with no money.I got into a line of men, women and children waiting to be admitted into the dining room where a free hot meal is served every day.
From there I walked to Health Care for the Homeless -- an organization dedicated to providing free medical care to people who have no permanent residence.Inside were about 75 homeless women and men waiting to be seen by a nurse. There I spoke with an older man who had serious family problems that caused his homelessness.
Next,I stopped at a hotel and fast-food restaurant asking if they were hiring. From there I walked the streets of downtown Baltimore asking people for a little loose change to buy a cup of coffee.I politely approached approximately 35 people.About 30 of them ignored me,and said they didn't have any money,or simply said no.But five people did offer me a small donation.I explained what I was doing, and thankfully declined their generosity.
Later that night,as I walked back to my vehicle,I realized that I was a richer person for having lived one day as a homeless man.I thought about the homeless men and women I encountered, and their problems.

A.He had a word with a homeless man.
B.He helped an older man with family problems.

(3)What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A.The author worked a few hours in the restaurant.
B.People should have cared about the homeless more.

D.Very few people looked down upon the homeless.
(4)What would the author most probably do in the future?

6.When I was 27 years old,I went to teach seventh graders math. And like any teacher,I made quizzes and tests.I gave out homework assignments. When the work came back,I calculated grades. What struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students. Some of my strongest performers did not have high IQ scores. Some of my smartest kids weren't doing so well. And that got me thinking.
After several more years of teaching,I came to the conclusion that what we need in education is a much better understanding of students and learning from a motivational perspective, from a psychological perspective. In education, the one thing we know how to measure best is IQ.But what if doing well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability to learn quickly and easily?
So I started studying kids and adults in all kinds of super challenging settings, and in every study my question was,who is successful here and why?I studied new teachers working in really tough neighborhoods, asking which will be the most effective at improving learning outcomes for their students? As a result,it wasn't good looks, physical health, and it wasn't IQ.It was grit(毅力).Grit is working really hard to make your future a reality.Grit is living life like it's a marathon.
To me,the most shocking thing about grit is how little we know, how little science knows, about building it.Every day, parents and teachers ask me, "How do I build grit in kids? What do I do to teach kids a solid work ethic? How do I keep them motivated for the long run?" The honest answer is,I don't know.
What I do know is that talent doesn't make you gritty. In fact,in our data, grit is usually unrelated or even inversely related to measures of talent. In other words,we need to be gritty about getting our kids grittier.
