  • 4.On Sept.18,2020,the world lost one of the greatest pioneers of women's rights in modern history. On that day,US Supreme Court justice (法官) Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at the age of 87.
In 1960,when Ginsburg applied to be a clerk at the Supreme Court, she was turned down just because she was a woman. This experience inspired (激励) her later efforts to fight for the rights for women.
She helped many women while working as a lawyer, winning their cases and earning them greater rights. For example,in 1975,she won a case that earned women the right to collect their dead husbands Social Security benefits (社保金) while caring for their children.
But it was her work in the Supreme Court that really allowed her to make a difference. In 1996,three years after joining the court, she wrote an opinion that ended a military school male-only admissions policy (录取政策).
She wrote that any policy that doesn't give women the equal chance to participate in society -- simply because they are women -- is illegal (违法的).After this case ended, the court started to pay greater attention to women's rights in future decisions.
Ginsburg became a pop culture icon during her time on the court. Her image can still be found on coffee mugs and T-shirts.Her life is the subject of books, documentaries, and even an opera,Ginsburg's fight for equal rights for women was never-ending.This strong belief in justice for women is one of the things that has made her so well-known and beloved.
