4."Hurry up or you will miss the bus," I reminded my 13-year-old twins. The bus arrives at 6:40 a.m.,so it's cold and dark in the morning.
I'm the only parent standing at the bus stop.It wasn't always this way.In kindergarten, other parents waited with their kids and as the kids got older, they gradually disappeared.I often find myself wondering,"Why am I still waiting at the bus stop when they are old enough to be here without me?"
At first,I thought I was afraid that my children might be hit by a car or get hurt. But it's ridiculous and unlikely because I have witnessed my kids look both sides regularly before crossing the street. It's also not that I am a helicopter parent.I often let them stay home alone,so why couldn't I let them walk alone for ten minutes?
As we walked along the sidewalk,my daughter said,"Mom,we are doing a push-up and sit-up challenge in gym class."
"That sounds interesting.Do you want to do it?" I wasn't sure how she felt about it. "Yes,I've been practicing for it."
"Do you like gym class?"
"Yes,but I don't like that we have to change our clothes."
During our ten-minute walk to the bus, they tell me about their upcoming schedule or what happened the day before.I feel connected to them. They aren't distracted by screens or their activities;they are present with only me.I've become acquainted with the neighborhood teens too.I only spend ten minutes at the bus stop with them, but I've learned their interests and activities.
Now,I look forward to walking with my kids to the bus stop.I'm simply grateful for the precious moments I can spend with them.
(1)What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A.The author's work requires getting up very early.
B.The author still goes with her kids to the bus stop.
C.The author is the only parent driving kids to school.
D.The author's kids are too young to take a bus alone.
(2)Why did the author refuse to let her kids walk by themselves?
A.She values the communication with them.
B.She worries about their lateness for school.
C.She fears traffic accidents might hurt them.
D.She is a typically nervous helicopter parent.
(3)Which of the following best describes the author as a mother?
A.Curious.
B.Humorous.
C.Caring.
D.Romantic.组卷:0引用:1难度:0.6 -
5.FORGET smart phones and smart glasses. One day,we might have smart tattoos(文身).The company NewDesign put forward an idea for a product called Under Skin. The device would look like a pair of tattoos on your palm and your thumb, but it would actually be a thin computer buried just below your skin.It would draw power from your body's energy, and you could use it to unlock doors, monitor your health, exchange and store information,or even express your personality.Under Skin is just an idea --- you can't go out and get one --- but the technology exists to make it work. "We assume it is about five years from being real," says designer Gadi Amit.
Graffstra,a researcher already has a chip called RFID(a radio-frequency identification)tag buried in his hand. "I use it to log into my computer and share contact details with people," he says. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and responds to radio signals with a unique identification number.
If a computerized tattoo or embedded(嵌入)tag isn't crazy enough for you, what about a brain chip? The company Intel is working on technology that would let you control your devices with your mind.Dean Pomer, one of the researchers, explains,"We're trying to prove you can do interesting things with brain waves...Imagine being able to surf the Web with the power of your thoughts."
Do you think embedded chips sound creepy or cool? Some doctors are concerned about people hurting themselves while getting devices implanted. They argue that medical procedures are meant to heal sick people and not to give healthy people special powers.Others worry about hacking and privacy.Could someone hack in and steal your identity,or even control your mind?
What do you think --- would you want a computer under your skin?
(1)What can we know about the Under Skin?
A.It has many functions.
B.It is a product on sale.
C.It is a chip under your arm.
D.It draws power from the outside.
(2)Which of the following best describes Pomer's attitude to brain chips?

6.Picture in your mind warm cookies, sweet candies, yummy cakes and ice-cream.Is your mouth watering? What happens in the brain that makes sugary foods so hard to resist? What happens when sugar hits your tongue?
You take a bite of bread. The sugars it contains activate(激活)the sweet-taste receptors on the tongue. These receptors send a signal up to the forebrain. From there the signal activates the brain's reward system,a series of electrical and chemical pathways across several different regions of the brain. It is a complicated network, but it brings the answer to a subtle, subconscious question:"Should I try that again?" That warm, fantastic feeling you get when you taste grandma's chocolate cake?Your reward system will definitely say,"Mmm,yes!"
And it's not just activated by food.Socializing and drugs are just a few examples of things and experiences that also activate the reward system.
The major drive of our reward system is dopamine(多巴胺),a chemical important to our nerve system.Drugs, alcohol or nicotine sends too much dopamine, leading some people to be addicted.Sugar also causes dopamine to be released, though not as violently as drugs.
Another reason is that when it comes to food, the brain has evolved to pay special attention to new or different tastes. If you rarely eat sugar or don't eat much at a time, the effect is evident. But if you eat too much, the dopamine response does not rise that high.In other words, you need continuous intake of sugar to feel rewardjye.aig.In this way, sugar behaves a little bit like a drug.
So,yes, overconsumption of sugar can have addictive effects on the brain, but a piece of cake once in a while won't hurt you.
(1)How does the author introduce the topic of this passage?
A.By raising questions.
B.By comparing figures.
C.By setting down rules.
D.By presenting results.
(2)What does the underlined "It" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The forebrain area.
B.The reward system.
C.The electrical signal.
D.The sweet-taste receptor.
(3)Why does the passage compare sugar with drugs?
A.They are important to our nerve system.
B.They make people become unconscious.
C.They cause people to be addicted violently.
D.They contribute to the release of dopamine.
(4)Which of the following does the author support?
A.Addictive effects of drugs.
