1.Four best fall festivals in the United States
Fall might be America's favorite season, when we celebrate the art of getting together. Here are four fall festivals too good to miss.

October 9-13 / Sun Valley,Idaho
This fall, more than 25,000 people from around the world will watch 1,500-plus sheep march down Ketchum's Main Street.Even if nobody showed,third-generation farm owners would still tend their sheep through town to the grasslands on the Colorado River. It has become a reminder of a 150-year-old way of life.
Apple Butter Festival
October 12-13 / Berkeley Springs,West Virginia
Copper kettles (铜壶) balanced over the fire have been used in Appalachia for centuries. In Berkeley Springs' town square, the tradition is respected at the Apple Butter Festival:Competing cooks use long wooden sticks to mix the silky apple butter in copper kettles and sell it on site.
Nantucket Cranberry Festival
October 12 / Nantucket Island,Massachusetts
Every October, the island hosts the Nantucket Cranberry Festival,a free outdoor festival where visitors can pick cranberries (蔓越莓) in a traditional way and tour cranberry bogs (沼泽) on foot with local experts.Hourly public buses run directly from the ferry (渡船) landing to the bog,but book ferry tickets to the island ahead of time.
Kona Coffee Cultural Festival

2.There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care.To water his flowers,he used two buckets(水桶).One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.
Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side,to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed(惭愧的)because of its holes:before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked(渗漏)along the path.
Sometimes the new bucket would say,"See how capable I am!How good it is that the gardener has me water the flowers every day!I don't know why he still uses you. What a waste of space you are!"
And all that the old bucket could say was,"I know I am not very useful, but I can only do my best.I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me ,at least."
One day,the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual,he said,"You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back, and I want you to look carefully along the path."
Then the two buckets did so.All along the path, they noticed,on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare earth;on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.

3.My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.
Just a few minutes later,I heard my daughter shouting, "Dad!The bear is right behind us!" An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back-the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day.The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me.Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight.I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so,this was a fight I had to win:I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod.I raised my left arm to protect my face;the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side.My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand,I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away.I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then,as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack. The first time I felt panic.Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went.My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better.I'm proud that my family remainded clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.
(1)The whole text is mainly arranged in
A.result and inference
B.cause and effect
C.space order
D.time order
(2)The bear finally went away after it
A.felt safe
B.got injured
C.found some food
D.took away the camera
(3)The writer and his family survived mainly due to their
A.calmness
B.patience
C.pride
D.cautiousness

9. Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn't have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved,all of them standing in line,two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be.The mother was holding her husband's hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor."
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, "You got that right." The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, "Please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus."
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?"
The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn around and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.
Paragraph 1:
Seeing what was going on,my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
Paragraph 2:
That day I went back home with my father without any tickets, except a valuable lesson.
