11.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(发展轨迹) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.
(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?
A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?
A.Timely and long-standing.
B.All-sided and careful.
C.Time-limited and regional.
D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?
A.Worried.
B.Optimistic.
C.Supportive.
D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?
A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.组卷:0引用:1难度:0.6 -

13.The Trans-Siberian Railway is a single train line that crosses nearly the complete length of Russia, from Moscow to Vladivostok. It covers a total of 5,772 miles, running from Europe to Asia.Unlike the longest flight in the world, which just began transporting passengers in 2018,the Trans-Siberian Railway started its business in 1916.
Anyone who has taken this long journey,or even just part of it,will tell you that it travels at a rather slow speed, passing through some amazing, remote areas of Russia. You don't have to make the full journey without stopping.Instead, you're recommended to get off where there are attractive views, since it stops in some pretty fantastic places. But you certainly can take the full journey non-stop.If you do,the trip will take about 144 hours-six full days!
You can book tickets with travel agencies. You can also make the booking online and tickets will be sent to your hotel or personal address.Children under 4 years old accompanied by adults can travel free, but cannot take up a seat.A child ticket needs to be bought if you want to get a seat for the child.
There are longer railway services in the transportation world, but only one of them is a passenger line as some longer routes transport goods, not travellers. This railway may not be the fastest or the most modern, but it's clearly still an important player in the transportation world!

14.Tasked with photographing one of the world's rarest big cats, you go deep into the jungle of Southeast Asia and set up a camera trap.Back at base camp, you look through the images it captures.identifying monkeys, otters and finally what you've been searching for:the mysterious clouded lcopard.
Now you can engage with all this without having to leave the comfort of your own home.A new mobile game Unseen Empire turns one of the largest-ever wildlife camera trap studies into a playable experience. It is based on an ongoing,decade-long camera trap study by Professor David Macdonald and his team at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at Oxford University. The game is divided into different levels, each level taking place in a different location around the world. As you progress through the game, you can update your camera equipment to capture better images and unlock new locations to explore.
Unseen Empire uses a significant number of real photographs from the study and allows players to identify species within this rapidly degrading environment.Players take on the role of a researcher in a real scientific study and the photographs can help them better understand wildlife conservation science. To understand the clouded leopard's habitat,6 million camera trap photographs captured in the study are used in the game. They are not only attractive but there's something just incredibly raw and real about capturing these animals' entirely candid (抢拍的) moments.
While the game is free and doesn't generate donations, the hope is that Unseen Empire can provide new ways for people to engage with endangered animals."If you don't have any encounter or experience with elements of nature, then what motivation can you have to take a personal interest in it?"says Macdonald.
"I would like to think that engagement with this game will lead to a feeling of value, which will affect how they think about nature,"says Macdonald."So,in that sense,we'd like to be part of a revolution on how people view the role of humanity, alongside the wider environment."

A.To show love of photography.
B.To explain the rules of a game.

15.Imagine a child standing on a diving board four feet high and asking himself the question:"Should I jump? "This is what motivation or the lack of it can do.Motivation and goal setting are the two sides of same coin.(1)
Like the child on the diving board, you will stay undecided.
(2)More than that, how should you stay motivated to achieve the goal?First, you need to evaluate yourself, your values, your strengths, your weaknesses, your achievements, your desires, etc.Only then should you set your goals.
You also need to judge the quality and depth of your motivation. This is quite important, because it is directly related to your commitment. There are times when your heart is not in your work.(3)So,slow down and think what you really want to do at that moment.Clarity(清晰)of thoughts can help you move forward.
Another way of setting realistic goals is to analyze your short and long term objectives, keeping in mind your beliefs, values and strengths.Remember that goals are flexible.(4)They also need to be measurable. You must keep these points in mind while setting your goals.
Your personal circumstances are equally important. For example, you may want to be a pilot but can't become one because your eyesight is not good enough.(5)You should reassess your goals, and motivate yourself to set a fresh goal.
You will surely need to overcome some difficulties, some planned, but most unplanned. You cannot overcome them without ample motivation.Make sure that you plan for these difficulties at the time of setting your goals.
A.This can affect your work.
B.So how should you motivate yourself?
C.However,this should not discourage you.
D.So why should we try to set specific goals?
E.They can change according to circumstances.
F.Motivation is what you need most to do a good job.
