  • 2.If there was a subject at school that made me anxious,it was science.
Maybe that's because in tenth grade,I couldn't understand my physics teacher's instructions, causing me to accidentally set fire to the classroom. So,when my husband and I decided to homeschool our daughters,we made a deal:He would teach science, while I would handle everything else. However,my husband has been too busy to teach the girls.Recently, while out on my morning hike before starting lessons,I noticed that the sky was a beautiful blue one,and the air was filled with the sweet smell of flowers.
That's why I decided that the day's lessons would be taught outside, although I remembered that my daughters hadn't had any science classes from my husband for a while. We headed up into the forest, settling ourselves by a pond that rarely has any visitors.I handed Ula a drawing board and the colored pencils. "We wait," I told her,"and see if something comes along. In the meantime, just draw what's around you." We worked for more than an hour, barely (几乎不) speaking.A bird flew across the water, and then settled in front of a fallen log (原木).I quickly told Ula,worried that she'd not seen the creature. But she had,and she began drawing it.An hour later, she finished her picture, and I stared down at it.She drew the bird on her paper with amazing accuracy. But there was one other interesting fact about this drawing:She also drew me,sitting beside her.
I realized,as I gazed at this child's drawing of us watching a bird, how I'd lived for 40 years and never understood the foundation (基础) of science before this moment. The foundation of science is a sense of wonder; It isn't about accurately reciting words from a textbook. It is first about stepping outside our busy lives and marveling at (惊叹) the world around us.
And from that day,I insisted on taking over from my husband's duty as the science teacher.

(1)What was the author's attitude toward science when she was in school?

    A.She hated it very much.
    B.She worked hard on it.
    C.She was fearful of it.
D.She was looking forward to learning it.
(2)Why did the author prefer her husband to teach her daughter science at first?
    .
A.Because the author has to handle everything else
B.Daughters would rather have their father teach them than her mother
C.Because her husband was good at science and was available anytime to teach
D.Because the fire accident which happened in her tenth-grade science class still had a negative effect on her
(3)What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.The fallen log.
    B.The forest.
    C.The frog.
    D.The bird.
(4)Which of the following best describes Ula?

    A.She's very outgoing.
    B.She's good at observing.
    C.She's very hard-working.
D.She shares common interests with her sister.
(5)In the author's opinion, what is the foundation of science?

    A.Teacher instruction.
    B.Attention to accuracy.
    C.Curiosity about the outside world.
D.The determination to find the truth.

  • 3.Is there a way to quickly recall information just before taking an exam?Walking backwards might be a solution.Scientists said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, they were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The second group walked 10 meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video. The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average than the other two groups.
This suggests that the link between the concepts (概念) of time and space is important in terms of (就......而言) how our minds form memories.Time is really expressed through space. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle (角度).This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.
And New Scientist reported walking backward is not just good for the brain. It is also good for the rest of the body.Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can help us improve our fitness.Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories.
Besides, walking backward is less stressful for our knees. It could be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees.Walking backward also keeps our spines (脊柱) strong, which can help to reduce pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.

(1)"This activity" in Paragraph 1 refers to
    .
    A.improving memory
    B.taking an exam
    C.walking backward
    D.recalling information
    (2)Paragraph 2 is written to
    .
A.introduce an effective way of walking
B.explain why walking backward improves memory
C.show who can answer more questions correctly
D.describe how researchers did their experiment
    (3)According to New Scientist,walking backward
    .
    A.helps people remember information
B.allows people to see things from a new angle
    C.helps people burn more calories
D.can ease pain in people's knees and backs
(4)How many benefits of walking backward are mentioned in the passage?
    .
    A.Two
    B.Three
    C.Four
    D.Five
(5)What is the main message of the story?

A.Walking backward is becoming a popular way to lose weight.
B.Walking backward can help people in many ways.
C.Walking backward for 10 meters every day is good for your health.
D.Memories are formed when we do challenging activities.

  • 8.Sandstorms have been a major disaster for many Asian countries for centuries.
Scientists have tried many ways to solve this problem and in China,a mass campaign has been started to help solve it.
Sandstorms are strong, dry winds that carry sand. They are often so thick that you cannot see the sun,and the wind is sometimes strong enough to move sand dunes. The four main places in the world where there are sandstorms are Central Asia,North America,Central Africa and Australia.Ren Jianbo from Inner Mongolia described a terrible sandstorm he experienced as a child in the desert. "To have been caught in a sandstorm was a terrible experience,he said. "There was nothing to be done.It was the most frightening and the most dangerous situation I've ever been in.You just had to hope you'd survive.I thought I was going to disappear under the sand."
Northwest China is part of the sandstorm centre in Central Asia.Sandstorms begin in desert areas.Sandstorms in China appear to have increased in recent years as a result of "desertification"(沙漠化).This is a process (过程) that happens when land becomes desert because of climate changes and because people cut down trees and dig up grass.
Sandstorms sometimes affect Beijing.Citizens wake up to an orange sky and strong winds that cover the city in a thick,brown-yellow dust. The storms sometimes continue all day and traffic moves very slowly because the thick dust makes it difficult to see.So when it comes, people are advised by experts not to go out.If they have to,they'd better wear masks.
The desert is only 250 kilometers away from the west of Beijing. To prevent it coming nearer, the government is planting trees.Already the government has planted more than 30 billion trees and plans to continue planting for the next five years.
