Crocodile watching
Do you fancy getting up close to some of the most terrifying animals on earth?Crocosaurus Cove,in Darwin (Australia) has the "Cage of Death".It's an enclosure that's lowered into a pool. This gives you a 360 degree view of a crocodile as it's being fed.The cable broke once and the cage sank to the bottom, but they've fixed it since then.
Edge walk
How about walking along the edge of a building several hundred meters up in the air?If that sounds like fun, head off to the CN Tower in Toronto (Ontario,Canada).Built in 1976,the tower is 553.33 meters tall.

Plastic ball rolling
Do you fancy rolling down a hill in a plastic ball?
Plastic ball rolling is popular all over the world, but the place to give it a go is in Rotorua (New Zealand).Brother David and Andrew Akers came up with the idea in 1994.A typical orb (球) is about 3 meters in diameter, with an inner orb size of about 2 meters. There's no brake or steering mechanism, but the inner layer of the plastic ball helps absorb the shock.
Volcano bungee jumping
If you're looking for the adventure of a lifetime, how about going bungee jumping off a helicopter into the crater of a live volcano? As part of the jumping,a helicopter ride takes you to the Villarreal volcano, one of the most active in Chile.Once you're at the drop zone, you leap off the helicopter and fall into the volcano. Finally, you enjoy the ride back to the airport flying at 130 kph.

2.Londoners are great readers. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books—especially paperbacks (平装书),which are still cheap in spite of everincreasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy "proper" books, too, printed on good paper.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in bookselling.Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which is said to be "the biggest bookshop in the world" to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens' time. Some of these shops stock,or will make efforts to get,any kind of book, but many of them specialize in secondhand books,in art books,in foreign books,in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet.
Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books,Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap secondhand books, collectors must venture off the beaten track,to Farringdon Road,in the East Central District of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and put lots of books onto small handcarts (手推车) which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs (业余爱好者),who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.

3.How many times a day do you check your email? When you wake up?Before bed?A dozen limes in between? The technology that was supposed to make our lives simple has taken up too much time. The average teen spends more than seven hours a day using technological devices, with an additional hour just textmessaging friends.
The advantage of technological devices is connectedness.Email lets us respond on the go,and we are in touch with more people during more hours of the day than at any other time in history. But is it possible that we're lonelier than ever, too? That's what MIT professor Sherry Turkle observes in her new book,Alone Together, which clearly describes our changing relationship with technology.
For Turkic, the biggest worry is the effect the weak connections have on our development.Technology isn't offering us the lives we want to live."We're texting people at a distance" says Turkic. "We're using lifeless objects to convince ourselves that even when we're alone,we feel together. And then when we're with each other,we put ourselves in situations where we are alone—always on our mobile devices. It's what I call a perfect storm of confusion about what's important in our human connections."
Moreover, communicating online is not equal to facetoface communication.Online, you can ignore others' feeljye.aigs.In a text message, you can avoid eye contact.A number of studies have found that this generation of young people is sympathetic (有同情心的) than ever. "That doesn't lead to disaster," says Turkle, "but the disadvantages still cannot be ignored."

A.email checking helps people wake up early

A.Technology may make human connections confusing.
B.Technology can't help people remove loneliness.
C.Technology may make people's lives hard.
D.Technology keeps people together.
(3)What is the author's attitude towards the influence of technology on people's life?
A.Positive
B.Negative
C.Hopeless
D.Uncertain
(4)What is the passage mainly about?
A.Technology brings many conveniences to people's lives.
B.Young men spend too much time on technological devices.
C.Technology also brings people some disadvantages.

Keeping in Touch There is one thing better than making a new friend and that is keeping an old one.
-Elmer G.Leterman Two years ago my family moved. The day that we left,my best friend and I cried together in my empty bedroom for hours. No words could describe how sad and homesick I was during the five-hour car ride to my new house.Life was so unbearable that it seemed to be the end of the world. When we finally reached our new house,I rushed to the phone to tell my best friend my address and phone number. We talked for a little while, but I had to hang up because the long-distance call was expensive.
On the first day of school,I called her to tell her how it went. Then,on Halloween I sent her a letter with a picture of my new friends and me enclosed.Days later, she wrote me a letter. It wasn't even a letter-just a bunch of pieces of paper saying, "Best friends forever."
When I finally got her email address,I emailed her the longest letter I have ever written.I never received an email back, and by the third email letter with no response,my message grew shorter and shorter. With each passing day,I got angrier and angrier. At last,I never received a reply from her.
Mom said that I could always call my other friends, and that I didn't need to always call her.Give up on my best friend?Give up on the person I had known all my life? The person I had gone from diapers to Barbies to nail polish with, and who had been in the same class with me from the first through the fifth grade? My first answer was automatically "No way!" But after five more email messages, three phone calls and two more letters,I started to consider what my mom had said.Every night about a week,I stayed up in bed thinking,Should I give up?Should I keep trying?
