4.When was the last time someone did something unexpectedly nice for you?Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It's happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago,I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely unaware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't his company that disappointed me.I was recovering from a bad grade in my study.I could have collapsed in tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said, "Your meal was already paid for." My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye.He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar,had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said, "Yes,the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you."
Just last year,I was running a half marathon. With just 0.1 miles to go,I was out of gas.Runners call it "hitting the wall";I thought I couldn't move another muscle.
Out of nowhere,a teenager jogged up next to me and said, "What's your name, sweetie?Jennifer?Okay,Jennifer, let's go!Come on!It's just around the corner! You can do it!" And he ran with me until I picked up my pace.I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day.He was running in place of someone else.
I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need.Do you have any experiences like this?
(1)Why did the author say she was in misery?
A.Because she was doing poorly in her study.
B.Because she couldn't enjoy her meal quietly.
C.Because her friend complained so much.
D.Because she got into trouble with her friend.
(2)What do you think of the man who paid for the meal?
A.He knew the author well and always helped her.
B.He showed his kindness to his girlfriend.
C.He was generous and warm-hearted.
D.He liked making fun of others.
(3)What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author believes he is a lucky person.
B.The author thinks everyone around him is an angel.
C.The author feels grateful for the help he received.
D.The author often gets help and support unexpectedly.组卷:3引用:2难度:0.6 -
5.Peter Whittle helps people get their time back. From behind the counter(柜台) of his repair shop,he brings to life 1*century pocket watches, old European clocks, and modern Rolexes.
Digital watches and cell phones may have replaced traditional timekeepers for many, but in the 20 years since he opened Whittle's Watch Works, the demand for his services has only grown.Open three days a week,Whittle's shop takes in more than 1,000 watches a year, sometimes 10 in one day.
Sixty years ago, there were more than 50,000 independent watchmakers in America. These days, the number has dropped to fewer than 6,000,according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"People say no one wears watches anymore," Whittle said. "But at home, somewhere in a drawer, you might have your mother's watch or your grandfather's watch. And one day,you might find that you want to get it repaired."
Whittle said he's been busy since the day he opened. He doesn't advertise, and seldom has an online presence, but people knock on the door even when the closed sign is up.During office hours he wears a long white coat that makes him look like a doctor, which he is,in a way.Whittle's services can cost very little,or hundreds.
Working on Rolexes, each with about 225 pieces inside, costs an average of $700.Joseph Caprara,a watch collector, has been coming to Whittle's for more than ten years.Of the dozens of timepieces he's brought to Whittle, one of the most memorable was an inexpensive watch his mother wore. "What he's really doing sometimes is restoring memories,Caprara said. "Sometimes a watch is worth a lot more to a person than what you'd think."
Though the great increase of cell phones has led to fewer people wearing watches,Jordan Ficklin, executive director of the American Watchmakers - Clockmakers Institute, sees hope for the industry in newer devices like Apples watches, which he says are bringing back that sense of a physical connection with a watch. And like traditional timepieces, the marketing around computerized watches often links the device to emotional experiences:a non-athlete training for a first marathon,a parent monitoring a child's illness, people whose watches have become a basic part of their life.
(1)What do we know about Whittle's Watch Works?
A.It has fewer and fewer customers.
B.It opens five days a week.
C.It needs online advertising.
D.It is going well.
(2)What does Whittle think of repairing watches?
A.It is demanding
B.It still has a market.
C.It is disappearing slowly.
D.It should charge higher than before.
(3)What can we learn about computerized watches?
A.They can also create emotional ties with customers.
B.They will replace traditional watches.
C.They have a huge influence on cell phones.
D.They fail to sell well.组卷:3引用:2难度:0.6 -
6.A table-waiting robot cat built by a Chinese technology firm can carry plates of food, navigate(引路) a restaurant, miaow at diners and even react to having its ears stroked(抚摸).
Making its debut at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the so-called BellaBot was built for Chinese restaurants lacking enough waiters.
It is the brainchild of the Chinese robotics and artificial intelligence firm PuduTech. It features four shelves in the centre of its tower-like body to carry plates.Having been loaded up with meals by its human colleagues, the cat-themed robotic waiter miaows when it delivers food to diners to encourage them to take their plates. If customers thank BellaBot by stroking its ears,it will respond with a look of pleasure on its on-board screen, which displays animations of a cat's face. "The owner's hand is so warm,BellaBot has been programmed to respond.
However, much like a real cat,the robot's reaction soon changes if it is petted for too long.It gets mad to remind you not to interrupt its job," the designers introduced. The BellaBot waiter robot is a more personality-rich update to PuduTech's previous model, which featured a more utilitarian(实用主义的)design and user interface.
Both BellaBot and its predecessor were designed with a particular mind to Chinese restaurants which are often short of waiting staff.
In a real-world food-service setting, however,BellaBot may find it difficult to operate at peak times.Nevertheless, restaurants are expected to increase their reliance on automation whether in the form of robotic waiting staff or otherwise.Furthermore, improvements in technology will see consumer robot designs grow steadily better at communicating with humans and facing new activities.
