22.Leisa Duckwall is a food service worker at Nansemond Parkway Elementary School.She has served students breakfast and lunch since 2018.To order,students would point to the food they wanted,and then Ms Duckwall would point again and wait for them to say a "yes" or "no".They did so because Ms Duckwall is deaf.But now the communication between them is better.
One day in the restaurant,Ms Maskelony,who knows sign language,started a conversation with Ms Duckwall.The two signed back and forth(来回)until the teacher saw the kids were all watching jye.aim.The next day in the classroom,Ms Maskelony asked her students,"Do you want to learn to order food from Ms Duckwall by sign language?" They all felt excited and said yes.Then the class started with the basic signs that helped students communicate better with Ms Duckwall.They began with the main dishes like chicken and fish.Next,the students learned to sign letters.If a student wanted some rice,he/she would sign the letter "R".
It didn't take long before the headmaster heard about what was going on.He thought it was great for the students to learn a new skill.There's no more pointing in the restaurant at meal time.There are "words" including "hello", "good morning",and "thank you".When asked how it has made her feel,Ms Duckwall said","Happy."
