  • 2.A sweet film has deeply attracted audiences, including the judges at the Academy Awards. The movie CODA is shining a light, winning Best Picture of 2021.Instead of clapping, movie stars cheered by waving their hands,a lovely and respectful sign to the much under-represented deaf community.
CODA means Children of Deaf Adults and CODA is about Ruby,a hearing teenage girl growing up with deaf parents and a deaf brother.Though her ability to hear sets her apart from her family, the four people function as a unit.Ruby had been communicating in American Sign Language (ASL) before she could speak. She is her family's sign language interpreter(传译员) and helps out on the fishing boat. When the family's fishing business is threatened,Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her dream and her fear of leaving her parents.
This is an English language version of the 2014 movie La Famille Belier. However,CODA takes this story to a new level.Unlike the French version, which used hearing actors, writer and director Sian Heder insisted on using deaf actors,a first for Hollywood. The result is a deep and clear description of life within a deaf family.Deaf people, who often feel lonely, finally feel accepted, and are glad to see this movie.
Laurie Ann Barish,a child of a deaf mother, cried when she watched the movie."Finally,a special world is unmuted.I wish this had happened when I was younger. It would have been a wonderful gift for my mom.It was for the world to see that we're all the same," Barish said.
Thanks to CODA,cinema lovers may now be able to better respect and know about the deaf. "It's a culture that has been ignored and blocked off from access,"Heder said."I hope that people are going to be exposed(接触)to deaf culture and ASL through this film. They might never have seen a scene before where a deaf family is sitting around a dinner table."

(1)What does CODA tell us about Ruby's family members?

A.They make every effort to develop ASL.
B.They teach her to be an excellent interpreter.
C.They prevent her from running a fishing business.
D.They rely on her to communicate with the outside world.
(2)Which kind of person is probably Ruby?

    A.Adaptable and creative.
    B.Courageous and honest.
    C.Independent and considerate.
    D.Humorous and knowledgeable.
(3)What did Heder's decision to choose deaf actors show?

A.She tried to provide more job opportunities for deaf people.
B.She aimed at presenting deaf people's life more realistically.
C.She wanted the actors to have rich acting experience.
D.She hoped to add creativity to Hollywood movies.
(4)What does Barish mean by saying"a special world is unmuted"?

A.The deaf community gets public attention.
B.Her deaf mother is receiving some support.
C.Many unfair events in the world are reported.
D.Some deaf people refuse to learn about the world.

  • 3.Languages from the past are very different from today's languages. In the Early Middle Ages, the English word"make" was pronounced as "ma-ke"with a short "a" similar to the vowel(元音) in"cut".But in the Late Middle Ages,it was pronounced as"maak"with a long"a" similar to the vowel in"father".The word"make" was not the only one and this happened to many Middle English words.
To explore the reason, researchers,Theresa Matzinger and Nikolaus Ritt, analyzed more than 40,000 words from English texts from the Early Middle Ages. They determined the vowel lengths by using dictionaries or taking neighboring sounds into account and counted the occurrence frequencies of words with long and short vowels. They found the majority of monosyllabic (单音节的) Middle English words had long vowels. This means that monosyllabic words with a short vowel sounded"strange"and were not recognized clearly and quickly by listeners.because they did not fit the sound patterns that listeners were used to.In contrast, words with a long vowel could be processed by the brain more easily.
Over centuries, the easier learnability of monosyllabic words with long vowels made more and more monosyllabic words get long vowels. "One can imagine language changes like a telephone game," says Matzinger."One generation of speakers speaks a particular language variety(变体).The children of this generation process and acquire frequent patterns from their parents' generation more easily than less frequent ones and therefore use those pattems even more frequently. This second generation of speakers then passes a slightly changed language to their own children. We also notice the gradual language changes by the fact that our grandparents,we and our children speak slightly differently."
However,if this process happens over many generations, language changes so much that past varieties are hard for people today to understand. This development lies in the fact that our brain can learn frequent sound patterns more easily than less frequent ones. That is,the general capacity of our brain to preferentially learn frequent patterns plays a role in how languages change.

(1)What does the underlined word "this" in the first paragraph refer to?

    A.The disappearance of vowels.
    B.The simplification of word usage.
C.The spelling change in short verbs.
D.The lengthening of vowels in English words.
(2)Why did most of the monosyllabic Middle English words have long vowels?

A.To make a conversation more relaxing.
B.To make people recognize the words with ease.
C.To improve the international status of English.
D.To reduce the usage frequency of monosyllabic words.
(3)What do Matzinger's words in Paragraph 3 show?

A.It's easy to notice huge language changes.
B.It's difficult to learn words with more than one syllable.
C.Frequent speech sound patterns are easily passed down.
D.People tend to purposely make changes to English pronunciation.
(4)What may be an important reason for sound changes according to the study?

A.The processing ability of our brains.
    B.The education levels of communities.
    C.The introduction of foreign languages.
D.The changes in our living environment.

  • 9.I think the greatest satisfaction in the world comes from reaching out to someone and lifting someone up.You never know how big an impact you are making on someone's life is.And I believe in helping others in times of need.
At 1 am,on August 25,2017,Hurricane(飓风) Harvey made landfall in Houston,Texas. Before that,my family were preparing for flooding, packing food and first-aid kits, and planning for the worst. While we were taking our cats and rabbits upstairs,my friend Tom,who lived in the heart of Houston with his family, called and explained their dilemma(困境).Their area was issued with a mandatory evacuation(强制疏散) and they had to leave. With no place to stay, they were on the way to our house. All seven of them,5 kids, including a newborn, came in.Together we prepared their rooms and let them settle in.
After dinner,we turned on the news and saw Harvey coming in.That night none of us could sleep, listening to the wind blowing and the rain thundering down.Tom's 4-year-old daughter asked me,carrying a cat,"The kitty is scared. Can you make the rain stop, please?"With a forced smile,I comforted her and let the cat sleep with her. When we stepped out of the house the next morning,we saw the nearby lake completely full of water. It was an amazing yet scary sight.Tom went a little further down and came back wet.He explained that there was no way they could return home. They ended up staying that day and planned on leaving the next morning.
The next morning, the news reported how jammed and flooded the roads were in Tom's community. With tears and worried faces, they stayed for a week.Even my cats seemed to understand the terrible situation. Finally, when the roads were cleared,we all went to drop them off.On the way,I saw the damage the hurricane did and was worried about the state of their house.

    Paragraph 1:
I realized they couldn't live in it then when seeing their house.__________________
    Paragraph 2:
Over the course of the next week,we helped fix up their house.__________________
