12.Emoji (表情包) is the fastest-growing language – evolving faster than any language in history. These little electronic images started life in Japanese mobile phones in the 90s and are now hugely popular. In the UK they are more popular than internet abbreviations like "lol" (laughing out loud) or "xoxoxo" (hugs and kisses).
Why do we love them so much?
People seem to like "big red heart" emojis! But why? They allow us to personalize text and have fun as we express ourselves and make people laugh.UK teenagers also told us they really appreciated the fact that emojis are quick and easy.People also really identify with their favorite emojis.
The emojis we choose can reflect our personality. In the UK,the most used emojis are "face with tears of joy", "face blowing a kiss" and "love heart".Maybe (with emojis at least) the British are more fun and romantic than people think!
Diversity and representation
Emojis do not always represent the people that use them. However, after many years of public
campaigning, things are changing.Instead of just cartoonish yellow faces,we now have the option for five different skin colors. There is also now a redhead emoji,by popular demand (需求),and a woman wearing a headscarf, after German teenager Rayouf Alhumedhi campaigned for an emoji to represent her.
The future of emojis
What is the future of emojis? They are already shaping social media as existing and new platforms evolve to incorporate (包含) and respond (回应) to their use.Is emoji evolving so rapidly that it will soon compete with English as a global language?Or is technology changing so fast that emojis will soon be forgotten when the next big thing comes along? It is hard to predict and even technology and language experts are divided on the subject. What do you think?Keep your eyes open for new developments!
(1)What is the meaning of the word underlined in the first paragraph ?
A.developing
B.gaining
C.working out
D.undergoing
(2)Why are emojis so popular, according to the article?
A.They offer different versions to different countries
B.They're a true reflection of the people who use them.
C.They express people's feelings in a quick and fun way.
D.They help improve our relationships with others.
(3)Rayouf Alhumedhi's example is mentioned to show
A.that users are invited to design emojis themselves
B.how emojis change people's lifestyles
C.that emojis are not welcome in some countries

(4)What does the author think of the future of emojis?

C.They will become a global language.
D.They will soon be left behind by newer inventions.组卷:0引用:1难度:0.6 -
13.People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans(寿命)that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years.
Now scientists believe they know why.A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a large number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.
According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal's sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors.
"An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution(进化) of large body sizes in many animals," the study author Dr.Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and mice. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.
This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named "Peto's paradox".Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use.In the elephant's case, the making of TP53 is nature's way of keeping this species alive.
The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in mice, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place.
"Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer," said Joshua Schiffman,a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. "It's up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.''
(1)Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer?
A.They have a rather large body size.
B.Their genes suffer no DNA damage.
C.Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors.
D.They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing.
(2)According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals?
A.Deadly tumors.
B.The huge body mass.
C.Cells killing themselves.
D.Sensitivity to DNA damage.
(3)What does the underlined part "This phenomenon" in Paragraph 5 probably refer to?
A.Larger animals have protection from TP53.
B.The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes.
C.Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones.
D.The huger animals are,the bigger risk of cancer they will have.
(4)What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer.
B.The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people.
C.Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53.
D.The extra copies of elephants' genes are used to cure cancer patients.组卷:0引用:1难度:0.7 -
14.Australia is no stranger to wildfires. The country's weather patterns create heat and dryness, which fuel occasional bushfires in a natural cycle. However, one that started in September,2019 continues to bum,and it may not be natural at all.So far,the fire has burned 7.3 million hectares (73,000 square kilometers) of land, killing at least 28 people and destroying more than 3,000 homes in the process, reported The Telegraph.Scientists say that man-made climate change has played a role in the fire's creation and duration.
"What we have are fires that might have occurred anyway," Peter Gleick,a US climate scientist, told Time. "But the extent, the severity(严重程度) and the intensity(强度,烈度) of these fires are far worse than them otherwise would have been without the fingerprints of climate change."
According to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, the country's temperatures have risen by more than one degree Celsius since 1920.The spring of 2019 was Australia's driest in 120 years. In December, the country saw its hottest day ever, with an average temperature of 41.9
"Due to enhanced(过度的) evaporation(蒸发) in warmer temperatures, the vegetation and the soils dry out more quickly," Stefan Rahmstorf,a lead author of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment Report, told Time.
Worse still, researchers at the UK Bureau of Meteorology believe that wildfires like this might become "normal conditions" in the future, according to the BBC.They looked at 57 research papers published since 2013,which examined the relationship between climate change and the risk of wildfires. They found that the link between the two had already been observed in many parts of the world, including the western US,Canada, southern Europe, and even Scandinavia and Siberia.
"These are impacts we are seeing for one degree of global climate change. The impact will get worse if we don't do what it takes to stabilize the world's climate," Corinne Le Quere,a professor from the University of East Anglia in the UK,told the BBC. ''What we are seeing in Australia is not the 'new normal'.It's a transition to worse impacts."

D.Why climate change has drawn international attention.
(4)What did Quere tell people in the last paragraph?
A.The future of Australia.
