  • 13.My brother Stanley died last January from cancer, and I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months.I witnessed the care he received and,at the time,I thought it was poor.It shocked and hurt me.
While Stanley was sick,I was a medical student.I therefore had an investment in the medical profession. It gave me an insider's view of the care Stanley received, when most people spending time with a very sick loved one only have an outside view. However,as I see now, it made me judge the care that his doctors and nurses gave him too harshly.
We experienced long waits in emergency departments, and doctors were unsure of the particulars of Stanley's case.We waited around for doctors to arrive, but they seldom turned up.But worst of all was Stanley's senior doctor.Near the end,he announced coldly that there was nothing left to try. "All the options have been used," he said. And with that,he departed, never to be seen again.
All this affected the way I thought about my studies.Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chart? After Stanley passed away,I finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of the students in my year.
They went on to get jobs in hospitals, while I took a year out.I simply couldn't face working in medicine.
Eventually,I applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myself, and I often had to tell patients bad news.It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a grave illness.I also found that I couldn't always answer patients' questions. They would want to know whether they could be cured,or how long they would live for,but it wasn't always possible to say.
It was then that I understood what a difficult job health providers do.It made me think back to my encounters with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick.Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.I began to see my patients as Stanley, and myself no longer as his sister, but one of his caregivers. Now I was in their shoes - the people who spend every day caring for others.
I still miss Stanley horribly, but at least now the anger has gone.

    .
A.the insider's view of the care
    B.the care her brother received
    C.the author's medical profession
D.the author's long stay in hospital
(3)The author changed her opinion after she
    .
    A.took a year out
    B.communicated with her classmates
    C.encountered Stanley's doctors again
D.experienced caring for cancer patients directly
(4)The author wrote this passage in order to
    .
A.give advice on how to become a doctor
B.stress the importance of being a caregiver in daily life
C.share how she became a doctor after her brother's death
D.explain how her attitude toward being a caregiver changed

  • 14.The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential,it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping-where you hand over notes and count out change in return-now happens only in the most minor of our retail encounters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop.At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted(抽象的).And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go.At the most cutting-edge retail stores-Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance-you don't go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay.The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.
Which is nothing more or less than excellent service,if you have the money. But across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy.Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.But earning money isn't quick or easy for most of us.Isn't it a bit weird (strange and unnatural) that spending it should happen in half a blink(眨眼)of an eye?Doesn't a wallet-that time-honoured Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness-represent something that matters?
But I'll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment.Everything about the look and feel of a wallet-the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age,the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets-is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smart phone or an iPad.The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as a pebble (鹅卵石) .Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners,we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins.Show your wallet,if you still have one.It may not be here much longer.

(1)How are business transactions done in big modern stores?

    A.Via a cash register.
    B.With banknotes.
    C.Individually.
    D.Electronically.
(2)What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?

A.Spending money is so fast and easy.
B.Earning money is getting more difficult.
C.The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.
D.Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.
(3)Why does the author choose to write about what's happening to the wallet?

A.It has something to do with everybody's life.
B.It represents a change in the modern world.
C.It marks the end of a time-honoured tradition.
D.It is the concern of contemporary economists.
(4)What can we infer from the passage about the author?

A.He is resistant to social changes.
    B.He is against technological progress.
C.He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.
D.He feels insecure in the ever-changing modern world.

  • 15.Some researchers are investigating what it is,exactly, that makes lonely people stay ljye.aily.One long-held theory has been that people become socially isolated (孤立的) because of their poor social skills. But a research suggests that this is a complete misunderstanding of the socially isolated.Lonely people do understand social skills, and often outperform the non-lonely when asked to prove that understanding. It's just that when they're in situations where they need those skills the most, they choke.
Franklin & Marshall College professor Megan L.Knowles led four experiments that prove lonely people's tendency to choke when under social pressure. In one,Knowles and her team tested the social skills of 86 undergraduates. She told some of the students that she was testing their social skills, and that people who failed at this task tended to have difficulty forming and maintaining friendships. But she set the test differently for the rest of them, describing it as a kind of exercise.
Before they started any of that, though, all the students completed surveys that measured how lonely they were.In the end,the lonelier students did worse than the non-lonely students on the task. But when the lonely were told they were just taking a general knowledge exercise, they performed better than the non-lonely.
Previous researchers agree with these new results:Past studies have suggested, for example, that the lonelier people are,the more accurately they do in the test.As the theory goes, lonely people may be paying closer attention to the test, which results in technically superior social skills.
This current research presents a fairly new way to think about lonely people. It's not that they need to brush up on the basics of social skills.Instead, lonely people may need to focus more on getting out of their own heads,so they can actually use the skills they've got to form friendships and begin to find a way out of their isolation.

(1)According to the new research, what is it that causes some people to look lonely?

    A.They lack social skills.
    B.They don't like the society.
    C.They prefer the lonely lifestyle.
D.They fail to use social skills properly.
(2)How was Megan L.Knowles' experiment conducted?

    A.By questioning.
    B.By comparing.
    C.By investing.
    D.By measuring.
(3)According to the experiment, when did the lonely perform better than the non-lonely?

    A.When they're nervous.
    B.When they're stressed.
    C.When they're careful.
    D.When they're relaxed.
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

    A.When lonely people choke?
    B.How can you avoid loneliness?
    C.Why lonely people stay lonely?
D.Why lonely people lack social skills?
