  • 2.When we see a person in trouble, our immediate reaction is to lend a hand. Not to do so would be a moral failure. But what if we see an animal in trouble, does the same logic apply?
Recently,a group of filmmakers from the BBC-wildlife series Dynasties was alarmed when they saw that a group of penguins had fallen into an icy hole in Antarctica and been trapped with their young. The group dug a shallow slope(斜坡)so that a few of the penguins could save themselves.
The case has taken the international media by storm.Viewers watching this video let out a sigh of relief on social media. "I'm so glad.I understand not getting directly involved, but a helping hand isn't interfering, right?" a viewer tweeted.
However, others think that it is unnatural for human to interfere. It's an unwritten rule among filmmakers that they are there to observe, not to participate. For example,in another video of "Dynasties",a chimp was left to die after he was filmed being beaten up by other chimps. "Tragedy is a part of life. You can't have sunshine throughout your life.To have done anything else would only make matters worse," said the show's creator David.
In this case, however,Mike Gunton, the producer of the series, told the BBC, "There were no animals going to suffer by interfering. It wasn't dangerous. You weren't touching the animals and they had the opportunity to not have to keep trapped.I would help animals if I saw no real gain or disruption to the ecosystem."
Indeed, there will always be two sides to the coin, and human beings will forever be conflicted in such situations."There's no rule book in those situations. You can only respond to the facts that are right there in front of you," said Will Lawson, the show's director.

  • 6.The British people have just discovered a new country. It's called the UK!More and more people are choosing to take their holidays in their own country rather than travel abroad.
One of the most traditional British holidays is the"seaside holiday".Stereotypically(典型地),families get on a train or into a car and travel to British seaside towns.
In the late 1970s,air travel became affordable for the average family, and more and more British people started traveling abroad for their summer holidays. After all,the British weather isn't very good, even in summer,so a lot of Britons leave the UK for a vacation.
British holidaying habits have begun to change, however.Climate change means that the UK now has a hotter climate than before,so people do not need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, the credit crisis(信贷危机)has affected the international value of the British pound,so going abroad is more expensive than it used to be.As a result, more and more Britons are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.
In some ways, therefore, the UK.has come full circle. There is now an increased appreciation among Britons for the diversity of the UK.It is not just the geography that is diverse, ranging from the green hills of England to the mountains of Scotland. It is also the diversity of cultures that is beginning to be of interest to domestic people.People forget sometimes that there are different accents, languages, traditions, foods and peoples across all the regions of the UK.

  • 8.    If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into a genius.A group of American researchers believe that this is indeed true.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University conducted experiments on 33 volunteers who were recovering from heart disease following operation.
They found that people who exercised while listening to Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" did much better on verbal ability tests than without music.
"Evidence suggests that exercise improves the learning ability of people with heart disease," said psychologist Charles Emery, who led the study. "And listening to music is thought to improve brainpower. We just wanted to put the two results together."
The volunteers said they felt better emotionally and mentally after working out with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise.
"The Four Seasons" was used because of its moderate tempo(适中的节奏)and positive effects in earlier research.
"Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system, and these changes may have a direct effect on learning ability,"Emery said.
Scientists have been studying the effects of music on brainpower since early 1950s.
By 1990,experts were using Mozart's music, especially his violin pieces,to help children with speech disorders.Mozart was chosen because his music is not over exciting and has clear structures.
Now Emery wants to test people using music of their own choice.
"Because different people like different music,it's important to test the influence of other types of music on learning ability," he said.
With important exams drawing near, your parents will probably forbid you from listening to music. But perhaps you have good reasons to turn it back on.

  • 10.British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said,"The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are." This is absolutely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true.We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative.
British comedy draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy(悲剧).The Office is a British TV show from the early 2000s,famous for its dry British humor. The main character,David Brent,is a foolish man,and the show's comedy comes from his delusions(错觉).For example,he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone, but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.
In fact, this side of British humor is shown in British friendships as well.At university,my friends and I would always laugh at one another.I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm(挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
This approach-laughing at everything—may sound rather depressing. But our strange humor also played a big part in British history. In World War IⅡ,along with a stiff upper lip(坚定沉着),the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?
There is a saying in English: "Laugh and the world laughs with you;cry and you cry alone." If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it's best to just laugh it off!
