  • 4.Christmas is the extreme awesome day of joy, merriment, goodwill and every other positive feeling known to man,or you're doing something wrong. Many Westerners who celebrate these holidays feel more pressured by these expectations than excited.
As Maireda Seaman,a mother of three in New York City, puts it,"With Christmas there's all this pressure to be enjoyable and merry and frolicking, and everyone has to be hugely happy."But she adds,"Things just can't quite meet the expectation."
The result is perfectionism, competitiveness, disappointment, and,in general, stress.According to a recent survey by the Consumer Reports National Research Centre in the US,90 percent of Americans fear at least one thing about the end-of-the-year stretch we call"The Holidays".
For some it was obviously negative(消极的) things, like"getting into debt"and"long queues".But large numbers of people disliked some of the most basic contents of the holidays, like"gift shopping"and"having to be nice".A full 24 percent feared"seeing too many relatives".For all the idealising of family togetherness, some family members just shouldn't get together.
In my own family, each of us reacts to these stresses in a different way.My father, who every season complains bitterly about the bother of Christmas, has his own yearly tradition of promising not to"do Christmas this year".Of course,my mother and we children have the tradition of pressuring my father into doing it anyway. When my sister and I were little,we had high expectations about Christmas. One year after the gift-giving was over,we found ourselves depressed that the day hadn't been crazily fantastic.
Meanwhile, some feel under pressure to be the perfect homemakers.Ellie Buchdahl,23,says her family in England can't start dinner until 9 pm because the grown-ups can't stop worrying over the turkey,"In the end, there is this great stress while we try to work out—perform to make it"the best Christmas ever'," she said.
Gift-giving is one area where there is this kind of perfectionism. It can lead to intense competition, between and even within families.Buchdahl said that her brother gave her a more expensive gift than she gave him.He said that she owed" him more gifts to make up the difference.
Much larger pressure, however,is put on parents to buy the perfect gifts for their kids.In the US,some parents have criticised it by giving kids gifts including a battery,an onion, and a roll of paper towels. One mother gave her 4-year-old son his own shoe.Such tricks may be a little cruel, but perhaps they're on to something.

  • 8.Reading comprehension.
This book, titled If I Never Forever Endeavor,is about a bird who doesn't yet know how to fly.
The bird has to decide if it will try to fly,but it is not sure if it wants to.The bird says to himself, "I won't ever learn 'if I never forever endeavor'."On one wing,he worries he might fail and on the other wing,he thinks of how he may succeed. He worries that if he tries,he may get lost in the world. That makes him want to stay in his nest where he's safe.
I think this book would help other children to learn that trying new things can be scary, but sometimes when we try,we can find things that make us happy too.And this book will help others know that mistakes are okay and part of learning.
My favourite part is that the bird tried and learned that she could fly.I also like that I read this book because it gave me a chance to talk to mum about making mistakes and how Id on't like making them. Then I've l earned they are good and part of learning.
Boys and girls who are 3 to 8 years old would like this book because it teaches about trying a new thing and how it's important to get past being scared so you can learn new things.
I give the book 5 stars since I think it's important for other children to learn about courage.

  • 9.La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol lot near Valencia in Spain.Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this World's Biggest Food Fight where more than one hundred tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
Anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 people come to this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol's normal 9,000 population. There is limited accommodation for people who come to La Tomatina,so many people take the easier choice of staying in nearby Valencia just 38 km to Bunol.by bus or train.Shopkeepers use huge plastic covers on their storefronts in preparation for the dirty mess that will follow.
At around 11 an,the first event of the La Tomatina begins. Many trucks carry tons of tomatoes into the centre of the town. The tomatoes come from Extremadura where they are less expensive.Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a two-stray high,greased-up wooden pole and reached the desired ham at the top.In practice this process takes along time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins.
Those who take part in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves.Besides, they must squeeze the tomatoes before throwing for safety.Another rule is that nor one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious fight.such as a glass bottle.Although it is forbidden to tear someone else' s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman.
After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal.the end.At this point,no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors,so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves.
