  • 1706.All over the world, people celebrate New Year's Eve in many interesting ways. The New Year is celebrated all over the world but not necessarily at the same time.In most cultures, people wish each other similar sentiments(感 情)about prosperity(兴旺)and good luck in the coming year.
The Spanish custom is that at the stroke(钟 声)of twelve everyone should eat twelve grapes, one for every sound of the bell.It is traditional to eat them as you hear the bell ring. Most Spanish people watch the countdown on television. This tradition is very strange as it is nearly impossible to eat twelve grapes in such a short period of time.Wearing red garments is also a popular custom here,so you can see so many red garments being sold at this time of year. This tradition was started during the Middle Ages.
If you don't like the Spanish custom,do what some Germans do and drop molten(熔化的)lead(铅) into cold water to predict the future. The shape of the lead will predict how successful the coming year will be.If the shape turns into a ring, maybe you will get married;if it's an animal, perhaps you will eat more this year.In the United States, especially in the south, people eat black-eyed peas.
In Belgium people like to keep things simple. At midnight everyone kisses each other and exchanges New Year's greetjye.aigs.In Denmark,it is a good sign if you find a lot of broken dishes piled high on your doorstep at this time.Old dishes are saved year round to throw at the homes of friends and family. The more broken dishes you have, the more friends you must have.

  • 1709.I still remember what happened on my first English class in high school. Many new students were chatting with each other, and I sat quietly in the corner.I looked at the brand-new English text book and felt very nervous, because English study was a big headache for me.Just then,a beautiful girl with a big smile entered the classroom. She was our English teacher.First she introduced herself. Then she asked us to introduce ourselves in English. When it was my turn,I walked reluctantly to the platform and my feet trembled. The moment I stood in front of the whole class and saw the new and serious faces,I became so nervous that my mind went blank instantly. The teacher found I was struggling and came up to me.She patted me on the shoulder and encouraged me, "Just have a try!You can do it!" When  I heard this,Is lowly calmed down.I took a deep breath and finally managed to finish my self-introduction.To our surprise, the new classmates even applauded at the end of my speech, which encourage me a lot .

  • 1710.The Doctor Is Out It is a Friday morning in Boston, which means Dr Jim O'Connell is making his rounds. He might be more comfortable inside an exam room, but that's not where his patients are.O'Connell is one of the doctors making house calls to the homeless in the city.
More than 550,000 Americans are home-less,and many have health problems but can not get proper care.O'Connell and his team are doing something about it.They spend their days walking around where the homeless live—in parks, under bridges, and on the outskirts of town. They treat about 700 regular patients.During these rounds,O'Connell himself usually sees about 20 patients. He knows where most of them sleep and whom to ask if they are missing."I feel like I'm a country doctor in the middle of the city, you know?"he said.
O'Connell went to Harvard Medical School land was on his way to a famous oncology(肿瘤学) fellowship when his chief instructor suggested he take a one-year position as the founding physician of a new health-care program for Boston's homeless. That turned into a 33-year care for the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Pro-gram,one of the country's largest of its kind.
O'Connell takes care of just about every-thing,from treating wounds to providing surgery for the soul.If patients can't be treated on the street,he finds them a treatment bed at the organisation's medical facility,a place for patients who are too sick to be on the streets but not ill enough for a hospital stay.
"Everything I had been taught to do (in medical school)—go fast,be efficient—was the opposite when you take care of homeless people," O'Connell told Harvard Magazine. "When you see somebody outside, you get them a cup of coffee and sit with them.Sometimes it took six months or a year of offering a sandwich or coffee before someone would start to talk to me.But once they engage, they'll come to you any-time because they trust you.I often say that the best training I had for this job was having been a bartender(酒吧侍者),because it's all about listening.
"When asked about how his life might have turned out had he become a highly paid oncologist,O'Connell said, "I never think about it anymore."
Some things are more valuable than money.
Just ask the man who gets everything from patients who have nothing material to give.

(1)What does Dr Jim O'Connell do on Friday?

(2)Who first inspired O'Connell to start his Friday practice?

(3)What's so special about taking care of the homeless?

(4)What virtues do you think O'Connell possesses?Illustrate with some details.
