  • 2892.I am going to tell you an unbelievable thing that happened in my restaurant today.
This afternoon a poorly-dressed gentleman came into my restaurant.Nobody knew(1)
    he was.We wondered (2)
he was so hungry. We were surprised (3)
he finished two orders of food in a very limited time.We doubted(4)
the man was able to pay the bill. The gentleman asked(5)
we would mind waiting for just a few minutes. Then we were shocked to see (6)
he took out of an envelope-a million pound bank note.
        I asked Mr.Clements (7)
it was genuine.Mr.Clements said it was true because two of this amount had been issued by the bank of England this year.He thought what the gentleman showed them couldn't be a fake.
Why a gentleman with a million pound note was in rags and ate in our small restaurant was a big puzzle to
all the people there.I really couldn't describe (8)

  • 2894.Today is National Bike-to-Work Day.And on New York City's jammed streets, people are cycling on hundreds of miles of new bike lanes. But New York's widespread efforts to make streets safer for bikes have also left some locals complaining about the loss of parking spots and lanes for cars.
When the weather is good,Aaron Naparstek likes to pedal(踩踏板)his two young kids to school on a special Dutch-made bicycle.Aaron supports the new lane.
Aaron:The bike lane on Prospect Park West is really introducing a lot of new people to the idea that it's possible to use a bike in New York City for transportation or to travel around. This is what the 21st century New York City looks like.
Prospect Park West is still a one-way road, but where it used to have three lanes of car traffic, now it has two, plus a protected bike lane.Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians,by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree.Lois Carswell is president of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to one-way traffic.
Lois:We wanted a lane- the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe and that would keep the bikers safe. But we want it to be done the right way.And it has not been done the right way.
Craig Palmer builds bars and restaurants in Manhattan.I was interviewing him for a different story when he brought up the bike lanes all on his own.
Craig:I think the biggest problem is that Bloomberg put all these bike lanes in.You took what used to be a full street and you're shrinking it.
Then there are the Hasidic Jews in Williamsburg,Brooklyn, who forced the city to remove a bike lane through their neighborhood. But the polls show that the majority of New Yorkers support bike lanes by a margin of 56% to 39%.Bicycle advocate Caroline Samponaro of Transportation Alternatives calls that a mandate.
Caroline:If this was an election,we would have already had our victory. The public has spoken and they keep speaking. And I think, more importantly, the public is starting to vote with their pedals.

  • 2897.Heads up!Across the country, sports injuries are a safety concern for young athletes. Now,the American Medical Association (AMA) has a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting players from the danger of concussions-serious injuries caused by a blow to the head.
"By raising awareness of the serious risks associated with concussions and ensuring that the appropriate guidelines are in place,we can reduce the number of young athletes who may return to the game too soon, which can put their health at further risk," said AMA Board Member Jack Resneck Jr.,M.D.,in a statement.
The policy recommends that young athletes who may have a concussion be taken off the field as soon as possible. Then, they are only to return to their sport with a doctor's written approval. The policy also sets age-specific rules for health care professionals and athletic organizations in evaluating and caring for athletes who have concussions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC),a concussion is a type of traumatic(创伤的) brain injury caused by a bump, blow,or jolt to the head or hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This type of movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist inside the skull (颅骨).It can damage brain cells and create chemical changes in the brain.
The CDC says that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million traumatic brain injuries caused by sports and recreation-related activities occur in the U.S.jye.ai year.A study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy showed that as many as 40% of high school athletes return to playing before they should. The AMA's new guidelines should help to bring those numbers down.

  • 2900.No poem should be discussed or"analyzed"until it has been read aloud by someone,teachers.jye.ai students.Better still, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,finally, the most telling"interpretation"of it,suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice,on records or on films,is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and teacher reading it or.jye.ai of all, reciting it.
I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than "analyzing"it if there isn't time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love jye.ai.Poetry is"a criticism of life"and"a heightening(提升) of life".It is"an approach to the truth of feeling",and it"saves your life".It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
Not that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential(基本的) nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room at class for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

    (1)To have a better understanding of a poem,one should
    .
    A.discuss it with others
    B.practise reading it aloud
C.write it down in a notebook
    D.analyze it by oneself
(2)What does the underlined sentence imply?

A.More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.
B.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.
C.One cannot enjoy life fully without learning poetry and literature.
D.Poetry is more important than any other subject taught at school.
(3)According to the passage, the writer believes that
    .
A.reading a poem aloud is making preparations for discussion
B.hearing a poem read by the poet himself or herself is unbelievable
C.the analysis of a poem should be placed second to reading it aloud
D.there must be a space for students to discuss poetry in the classroom
